My gift is encouragement in the form of mercy.

But lately it seems I have been defending the truth and reading the word more, being very direct and hard hitting from the Word of God.

Is it possible I may have the gift of being a prophet ?meaning I am not afraid to tell the truth or stand on the word of God and I find myself getting stronger and be able to counsel others as well.

How can I get spiritual confirmation about this?

What you describe is not the biblical description of prophecy. A prophet prophecies. To answer your question though, yes your gifts can change. Your studies make you stronger in the faith and knowledge of Christianity and God is providing opportunities for you to use your talents in His service. Confirmation for this will be found in the Christian community where your use of these talents can be witnessed by others with your talents.
BTW, your gifts as described sound more like teaching than prophecies.

Not sure about getting confirmation. I would ask your pastor and pray with friends or something like that.
I'm not sure if spiritual gifts change, so much as we might simply discover new gifts or discover our current gifts more in depth as we get older. The reason I say this is... your gift of encouragement/mercy I imagine is still present... you've just been branching off and discovering another one.
I don't think we ever stop discovering things about ourselves.
I would not assume yourself to be a prophet just yet... because you know that according to the Bible, if your prophecy is wrong once you are considered a "false prophet".... just to be on the safe side.
My sister in law has that gift also... although sometimes she has a hard time following her own advice. It's a vicious cycle.
Anyway, I would just rejoice in the gifts you have.
Praise God!

Just pray for confimation from the Lord. If God is leading you in a certain direction, go with it. I believe people can have more than one spiritual gift and can develop them over time through growth in their relationship with the Lord. Don't get bogged down with a need to name your gifts, just continue on the path God has for you and follow his leading.
