1080i true resolution?

Question

Can a 42 inch plasma HDTV produce true 1080i resolution if it is being broadcasted in 1080i or will it only do 720p?

My tv is the th 42px60u pannasonic.

1024 (h) x 768 (V) resolution

Your TV will only display 720p. It will convert any 1080i input to that. In that regard you will never get true 1080i resolution, and depending on the quality of the downconversion, you may not even get as good as 720p from 720p sources. For example: if the set fails to de-interlace prior to downconversion, then each field of a 1080i picture has only 540 lines, and that's what will limit the resolution you can see, even though the display will handle 720 lines. That being said, as far as I know, Panasonic does a reasonable job of de-interlacing before downconversion, so under the best of conditions (non-moving images) what you should see should be equivalent to 720p, but not better. (Note: all plasmas display in progressive scan regardless of input.)

Yes it can, but it doesn't matter much now because it's gonna be a long while until cable providers start broadcasting resolutions higher than 720p.

It's possible but it depends on the TV and the source signal. Some would say that 720p is better anyway since it is not interlaced.
