I have a 9 week old puppy named Shasta. I got her a couple weeks ago from a rescue shelter. I was told she's 1/2 Chihuahua and 1/2 mini-pin. Is it okay to feed her twice a day once in morning and then in evening? Should I leave her water or ice cubes when I go to work? She is home 6 to 7 hours during the work day. Right now I'm just leaving food and water out for her to eat freely, but I think this is hindering housetraining.

Three times a day is ideal but when work makes it impossible twice a day certainly won't do any damage. Kudo's on the rescue! Do you need house training tips? Oh, yes, she should have water throughout the day.

Puppies younger than 6 months old need to be fed 3 times a day. Their bodies are growing at such a rate that they need extra calories all through the day.
I think that it is better for now that you leave the food out for her, and sort of bear with her on the potty training thing. She is still really young and needs a little time to mature. Both for house training purposes as well as getting only 2 meals a day.
At 6 months puppies are fully grown and don't require the extra feedings.

Hi Kim. It's always best to choose a dog that fits your life style. While you may have identified breeds that fit, your life style is not good for trying to raise a puppy. I know they are cute, but a young adult or older dog, would be a better fit at this time. Puppies are like babies, and this doesn't seem to be a good fit with the time you are gone. Older dogs can adapt well to the rest of your lifestyle, and there's no truth is saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Best of luck in your decision. Rebel

At 9 weeks keep doing what your doing. She needs to eat more than twice a day. As she gets older (1 year) twice a day should be fine.

Get ready for a rough first year. Without anyone home house training will be very hard. (Do you have a doggy door?) Also during the first year they will chew everything. So try to have chew toys & bones available. Also keep your good stuff put away.

Pups usually have to go about 20 minutes after eating. Taking her out for a walk right after she eats will help this along a bit faster. You could feed first thing in the morning (after taking her out to potty) and then when you get home in the evening. Try that for awhile - it wont be long before she knows where to go and when :)

I already ate. Thanks though.

No Ice for young dogs. It will kill them as it hinders digestion. For older dogs only if proved they can handle it.

House-training can only be done when somebody is present. Until at least 6 months the dog should be able to eat when it wants. It is growing fast and has only a 'small' stomach. Until then, all you can eat buffet.

I agree with B.W. And ice cubes will not hurt your dog!!! They are messy but very fun for the pup!
