There is an addage to bloom where you are planted but I have been so uprooted in my life I find it much easier to crack jokes and wise off and make people laugh then to be gentle loving and kind. I want to learn to "turn down the volume" and tune in to the Lord adn be a better listener.

I think that God has given you a personality that he wants you to have, however, he wants to develop your character. Your character will tell you when it's okay to be funny. You character will help you see that having a smart mouth or wising off as you put isn't okay. I would ask God to help develop your character, but still keep your personality.

Dear Encourager, I'm glad you'd like to be a better listener. Look at the people around you, especially those who are older than yourself. What sort of traits do you admire in people? Do you like people chatting to people who are funny? I know I do, especially those who can think a little bit outside the square. Like some of the others who have answered this question, I think you should keep up the jokes and "shooting from the lip". Being gentle and loving is different from joking. There is a right time and a wrong time for joking. I personally think you have to be clever to be good at joking, so put it down to being blessed with a high IQ.
As one preacher once said, "I think God has a sense of humour", so I'd pray to have the sensitivity to chose when and when not to joke if it is worrying you.

just for today, be yourself, keep making people laugh, laughter is the highway to the soul. u will know when to turn down the volume, believe in God, he will show u the way.
