Can dogs commit suicide?

My neighbor's dog was a very happy dog was a very beautiful Siberian Husky, name Opal. The dog was raped by another dog in the neighborhood, and gave birth to some odd loking critters. Well, Opal loved all of her puppies. She would play with them and groom them, and they would all lay together in a circle sleeping. It was so beautiful. But, for some off reason, my neighbor gave all seven of Opal's puppies away. Opal just watched as they were loaded into the truck and they drove away. When my neighbor came back, Opal was very standoffish. She wouldn't eat, and she would whine for hours. I felt so sorry for the poor thing. One day Opal was sitting in the front on lawn (she wasn't on a leash because she was so well-behaved) and she wandered out into the street and stood there. A car was coming fast, and Opal saw it coming, she was staring directly at it. The car didn't swerve and Opal didn't move. She was killed instantly. I think Opal committed suicide from grief of her pups, do you?

The neighbor's daughter, and I are really good friends, so I was kinda close to the family. I was actually on the porch when Opal walked into the street. She's so well-behaved, I thought she was just crossing, but she stood there. I saw the car (and so did the daughter of the family), and she ran to it, and I screamed Opals name, but she didn't move....

That's such a sad story! I think that dogs can feel emotions too, so Opal probably didn't move when the car was coming because she missed her babies so much! My piano teacher has a Siberian Husky named Hulie, and that dog is gorgeous! I hope your neighbor's daughter is doing is okay. Take care and best wishes to you!

I don't think it would be intenional. There would have to be a lot of stress in that dog's life. True Story.. But I do have to tell you a little story about our "Bear" a mixed border collie. We lived on a 53 acre farm and had other farms around us. Our farm house faced a somewhat busy road for a farm area in Indiana. Bear would run all the time and he was the King of the dogs at our farm. Every time we would get a new dog, Bear would take them on a run. We would watch Bear run across the street with the new dog in the family. And one of us would wildly run out of the house to look for the cars and call Bear back. What he would do is go on this wild run, crossing the street to the other 40 acres on the other side and the two dogs would be having a wonderful time. Then Bear would turn and run back to the house in a full run with the other dog close by his side and then..."stop" about 20 feet from the road and lie down and watch the other dog run across the street barely getting missed by the on coming car. Bear would just lie there and then get up and slowly walk home. He would do this over and over. Then we all kind of wondered was he doing this on purpose. Then finallly one day he did it and Pumkin was fast on his heals. Pumkin ran across the street and wasn't so lucky. Bear laid across the street and stayed there then walked slowly home. Beleive it or not, you decide. Bear lived a long happy life until the age of 13. But after that. We made sure not to let the other dogs out with Bear alone again.

Very sad....... it it's really true. Most dogs know enough to get out of the way of a moving vehicle so if she just stood there and watched it....maybe. Dogs do have long term memories for some things. They remember people in an instant that they haven't seen for years. They don't forget when someone abuses them either. My dog, before I adopoted her, had been abused by a smoker who rode a motorcycle and she is still terrified of both after 10 years. They have feelings.....happy and sad. When you leave the house without them they are sad and when you come home...need I say any more???

That is so sad. I am sorry. But yes, I think that she was angry and depressed, most feamles are when there first litter is taking away. Shame on the onwer of her. Poor Opal. My grandmaws dog hung her self, but it was on accedienct. She was afraid of thunder and they were all gone and she jumped on the car and was chained up. and, well, fell beside the antina. I love huskeys, they are so pretty. But yes, i really agree with you.

It certainly sounds like she did not want to go on without her babies.
Oh - the poor thing! That is the saddest thing I've ever read. I hope she is happy up in heaven watching over her pups.

Good question i dont think they know exactly what they are doing so opal probably didnt know what would happen to her. Maybe she was curious what the car was or something.

No they do not. It has something to do with animal psycology. Only animals such as monkey, gorilla can commit suicide. Because their brain structure is human-liked. On the other hand, chicken, dogs, cats, or even cows do not commit suicide what so ever. But, all animals can DIE due to sadness and the disappearance of hope of continuing to live.

Dogs are much more intelligent and sensitive than humans really think. I think she did commit suicide. I've heard of it being done before...where they dont eat from sadness and die from starvation and dehydration.

Dogs are very caring and loving animals. I'm sure her heart was broken.

I think you made the story up, wack job.
Dogs don't have memories longer than a few weeks, unless it is something they see or do everyday. She wouldn't have remembered the puppies after awhile. Therefore she probably didn't commit suicide, she was probably going blind or senile or had something else wrong with her.
If this was a true story, which it isn't.

i am SO sorry! that is so sad i am crying. i dont know if she comitted suicide but she definetly was grieving for her pups. maybe you could ask some kind of animal vet or something about it. it would be interesting to find out .
