because that's what t.v. and movies tell us - they can't lie. Right? Right??

I'll preface this by saying I get called a crazy liberal all the time. I have known a few marines and the ones I've talked to have been great people. I think that some people who are against the way this government has abused the military go into the old "blame the victim" mode. I would hope the vast majority of us know you don't get to pick which orders you follow and have a deep respect for your service.
Plus the military and media do a pretty good job of making sure that whenever something criminal happens in war that it is the fault of the grunt carrying out the "illegal or immoral" order and not the fault of the commander giving that order.

Thank you for the work you do- it is a very difficult job.
However, some people do enjoy killing- both inside and out of the military. Just read the newspaper... You are right that most military do not enjoy it, that it is a job protecting our country. But, some people just generalize. Not to mention, it can be very difficult to understand killing anyone - no matter if you are in the military or not. Some people do not think it is right to kill another human being no matter what the cause. And, if you are good at your job, to some extent you do have to justify it or numb your mind to be able to do it. If killing someone doesn't bother you, then it is more than just a job...

Most people I know who think this are the same ones who think that we should NEVER go to war for ANYTHING. I, for one, do not believe that you enjoy killing someone else. From things I've heard from other marines, soldiers, etc, that's probably the last thing you guys want to do. Considering the fact that you've had to witness friends and/or family die infront of you during these times,(and I am so sorry if that hit a little to close to home) it sort of makes you think about having to kill someone out of self defense (which is generally the ONLY time any of you ever actually have to kill someone) when you know they probably have friends and family too, that will never get to see them again. I have a neighbor who is currently back home from being in Iraq, who I talk to a lot. He's a very good friend of the family and he tells us all sorts of things. In all honesty, my heart is with every single one of you guys. I'm so proud of all of you for having the courage to be able to do the things that most people couldn't even begin to imagine. So the next time you hear someone say something as ignorant as that, remember that there are still a lot of other people (including me) that have your back 100%. My heart and my prayers are with you and all of the other guys and girls out there! I love you!

It's because you've got some of your bretheren raping and killing 14 year old girls and then shooting up her entire family including a 3 year old girl.
It only takes a few bad apples to ruin the entire bunch. I know that not every enlisted soldier likes or wants to kill. But not everyone can seperate the crazy sick f'ers from the good soldiers.

people who think that killing some one is fun, even in combat, are people that have not had to kill someone before.
seeing a person die and knowing that you are fully responsible for that death is something that you will think back on for many years. laying in the jungle underbrush next to the man you just killed for 10 hours waiting on the sunrise, smelling his blood, his sweat and his stink, you don't forget and it is not fun, wondering if his family ever found out what happened to him or if he was just left to rot in the weeds and his family was left to wonder as many of ours were for years about the MIAs. do you ever forget the sounds that a man makes as he dies are they ever out of your memories? it is not a video game, there is no reset button and no cheat codes, no invincibility's, this time it was him that died, next time it could have been me.
Fun, not much

there are so many kinds of people in America... and some just happen to be ignorant, confused, mislead, or crazy. You're over there in the name of freedom... and anyone who doesn't understand that is about 5 cold ones shy of a six-pack!

I don't think that ANYONE thinks that marines like to kill. I think that most people think that is the worst part of the job. People would be crazy to think that! It's like saying that elementary school janitors like to clean up vomit because that is their job...totally crazy...

Because they don't know what it is like to face death in the face. They think that you guys are just going around and killing, but the enemy is trying to kill you. So it is Kill or Be Killed.
