I suspect she may have a mental disorder, but I do not know for sure. She is 8, and she has problems listening, constantly tells lies, does not like to share and has problems playing with other kids. She has a few physical gestures that she always does like sticking her tongue out to the side of her mouth and shaking her hands back and forth when she gets excited. She is never violent, but she does close up completely when she is unhappy or gets in trouble. Any suggestions?

Yes, I have a suggestion. We're not doctors here and you need to take her to one just to see if there might be a problem.

I would definitely call a pediatrician to discuss your concerns. These symptoms are common for many disorders. If there is a problem it could be anything from ADHD, ED or several different forms of autism. The trick is to find a MD you can talk to and feel comfortable with. You may be sent to a pedi psychiatrist to a neurologist. It can be scary but it is worth it for the proper diagnosis. Many of these disorders can be treated with meds. Many parents don't want to give their children meds, but you would treat heart disease with medication. Most MDs who know what they are doing will help you behavior modification. Look at the information about different types of autism on the web. I have taught some very high functioning children that had different kinds of autism. I wouldn't dare tell you what is wrong with you child. But I know as a parent I would read as much as I could, make a list of questions and concerns and them go to the MD.

Could that she possibly have one of the many levels of autism? How's her speaking pattern? I would probably focus in on her past and present developmental stages and how quickly she picks up on lessons. Those gestures may or may not be serious signs. I'd certainly consult a doctor, especially if it's been going on for some time.

Find a child psychologist or family therapist who specializes in Children.

The school district where she goes to school could also have a school psychologist meet with her and recommend if she should go and see a professional.

I would think that unless something is just now manifesting itself, you would have already known if your daughter was developmentally delayed, so it could be something else, or it could be that she is just immature for her age and/or shy.

Anyway, good luck.

You need to let a Dr. diagnose her. Could be something but also could be nothing. Just being a kid, I had similiar concerns about one of my kids and her Dr. and the schools say she is fine, she is an A-B student. Sometimes we expect too much from our children. I still think she is "Quirky" but now that the experts say she is fine I just chalk her up as being a "Free Spirit"

Have you reasearched Autism? That is what this sounds like to me. I have education in the preschool teacher field and I have studied this illness quite a bit. I have many friends with kids who have been diagnosed with Autism, its not as bad once you know what to do about it and how to help your child live the best way she can.

Listen as its your daughter's life take her to a doctor. Apart from that you need to teach her the basic manners by force or by love, depending on the kids nature. Note don't be too harsh on her as she might not develop.
