I got a kitten about a month ago. Someone threw him and his 2 sister out on the side of the road from a moving vehicle, in a garabe bag. Well I found good homes for his 2 sisters with my co-workers and I kept him. Well he is a healthy kitten, he has been to the vet, but he is petrified of being put into an enclosed area which I can understand with being stuck into a garbage bag and thrown away, but he also hates to be left alone. He will destroy the house when left alone if not put in enclosed area. Does anyone have any suggestion? He loves car rides and I love to take him but its getting hard cause he flips out when put into a carrier. I have a harness and a leash for him, but we are not progressing to much with getting him to walk on that.

Poor guy. I'm glad he found you, as you really seem to be working with him on all these horrible issues.
The best thing I can suggest is that when you have to leave him alone, put him in the bathroom with the door closed. It's a big enough place that he won't get scared, but made for easy clean up and disinfecting. I did it when I foster parented 8 kittens and didn't want them loose in my house. Worked wonderfully. They all think the bathroom is the playground even to this day.

First of all, if he's still a kitten, you should consider a second kitten. He's lonely and a playmate would be good for him.
Second, knowing he has an anxiety, you need to just work on that. Put the carrier on the floor with the door left OPEN and sit near it. See if he will go in/out on his own. Throw toys into it he can chase, or maybe put catnip in it to entice him. Don't enclose him, just let him go in and out. You might even try with a regular box -- cats usually love those. A box open at the top, then tipped to it's side, then tippped over him. Or a laundry basket that's more see-through. You just have to very gently coax him to do these things so he see's that you're there to protect him, trusts you to take care of him, and make sure he's not scared. Make these experiences fun and pleasurable. It's a time-consuming process, but you do understand the root cause so you know what to work on. And as far as destorying the house -- he's a KITTEN -- they do that. He'll grow out of that. A bedroom with not a lot of stuff in it would be good for "his" room when mommy is away. Good luck, and be patient! And thank you for rescuing the babies!!!

Would you be able to put the carrier on the floor and open the door or the lid? You aren't going anywhere, but that gives him a chance to go in and out without being confined. My husband and I have 2 cats who are terrified of the carrier (they associate it with the vet). We tried this and it worked. They aren't as afraid of the carrier as they were before.
As for leaving him alone, can you leave a radio on? Sometimes the sound of human voices is soothing enough that the cat won't be terrified.
If that doesn't work, you may want to talk to your vet about it.

If you can deicate a room to him, even a bathroom with kitty toys and a litter box would help, its best if there is a source of entertainment like a window ledge. (within safetys reasonings of course! not too high!) my cat used to tear everything in the house up as a kitten and this is what i did when i had to leave her alone at home. make sure the kittin has a cmfy place to sleep and there are no majopr holes into which to climb.

I am so proud of you for saving these kittens!! I see that you found homes for the other two, so you might not like my suggestion, but have you thought of giving your little guy a companion? If he has another feline to play with, he may not rip up your house so much. It is not much harder to take care of two that it is to take care of one. Especially if you introduce them now, while he is young. Just a thought. Good luck, and don't forget to neuter him when it's time!

Sounds like your cat has anxiety problems... don't laugh... its true. I would take him to the vet and ask him about the behavioral problems...
My cat has the same problem... he may have been separated from his mother too early and probably now has abandonment issues... the vet can prescribe you with calming medication that makes your cat more pleasant, personable, and relaxed.
I believe the medication is called Amitriptoline.

I second the idea of getting another kitten so he'll have a playmate when you're not home.
