I had an auto accident in 1979. I really didn't realize that most of the windshield had entered my body. For the first couple of years, I was able to get the larger shards out of my face: one lodged above my right eyebrow and one between my nose and upper lip. For a myriad of summers thereafter, if I lay in the sun, glass would work to the surface and come out. It seemed that the backs of my arms just above the elbows and the backs of my legs just below the knee took turns - one summer one of these would break out like I had measles or terrible acne there and large pieces would come to the surface. I used a needle and tweezers. In about 2000, I had a bloody splotch come up on my chest. It would turn brown and be gone in about a week. I eventually realized that it was a piece of glass. It has never come out but it has stopped severing that small capillary, obviously. Now a days, I get up in the morning, look in the mirror and have a small bloody dot. It is glass. Lately I have pieces come to the surface and burn, all over except in my eyes and on the bottoms of my feet. GOD! This is awful. My shoulders, my neck, the front of my left leg below the knee - the glass is just everywhere and I know when I feel it just under the skin. It hurts to touch. As soon as it breaks through the skin, I can feel it click against my nail when I drag my finger across it. But, each piece is a total ***** to get out. Sometimes it takes weeks or months to actually get the glass out so the little sore can heal. I wish someone would invent something or some process whereby I could extract this glass without enduring this never-ending process. I am grateful that I did not die in the accident; however, this is slow, painful torture. I fully expect to continue trying to get glass out of my body until I die.

Surprisingly. If you keep it sterile & leave it alone it will work its way out to the surface. You could speed removal by bathing it it warm dilute salt water & then having a friend use a sterile needle (heat it to red), and tease it out. If the piece is large forceps will work but the area should be cleaned and treated with an antiseptic, and then a topical antibiotic. (usually a combination of poymixin B, gramicidin, bacitracin and sometimes also neomycin.)
If infection sets in, have a doctor check it quickly.

If you are sensible by seeing a medically qualified person.

Removing it yourself risk infection. Not much of a problem you may think. Get an infection trying to remove it, say from your thumb, and the resultant infection might end up with you having your hand or lower arm amputated. Get blood poisoning you will become seriously ill with the possibility of severe consequences.

Saving a little money doing it yourself could cost you everything!!

Depends on size, depth and how it got there.

Let a skilled doctor handle it. Often a water jet is used to rinse the glass out as it is very hard to pick up and may even break into smaller pieces.

it will remove itself in time just make sure it does not travel anywhere from the spot its in if it starts moving then the dr might take it out but they will just leave it in and let it work itself out otherwise just give it some time
