as a foster parent. I want a baby or toddler, rather than an older child because not having given birth, I want all the experiences of raising a child from infancy. What can I expect from foster parenting and is a 50+ woman too old to do this?

First, lets have some reality here.
Most agencies will not let you adopt an infant or toddler at your age.
Including childrens services in most states.
Possibly you could get a foreign adoption, depending on the agency that handles it, they too are restrictive.

As far as private adoptions, most these days allow the birth mother to choose, and I don't see many birth mothers willing to adopt a child out to someone the age of their mother or grandmother.

Personally, I think older parents often can be the best parents, just pointing out the obstacles here.

Another point (and I am guessing/hoping you have already thought this through), you need to make sure you are in good health, because you want to be able to be here for that child well into adulthood. Also, just because the chances of something happening are greater because of age, you need to make sure you have an excellent alternative home arranged for the child just in case.

I agree it might be a good idea to foster a young child for a year or so first, to get an idea of the energy and time required. You are not at all too old for foster parenting ... they love the older folks for this.

Should you decide to follow through on adoption, I wish you all the best!!

Not true that someone over 50 is unable to adopt a child or toddler. There are lots of women who adopt babies/toddlers as older parents.

You could try foster care services (Child Welfare) in your state or county. If you want to adopt a child from overseas, there are several countries that allow older parent adoption. You may not be considered for the youngest infants, but I know a lot of countries will allow you to adopt a 2yr old or older toddler.

As for being "too old" - only you can decide if you have the energy for diapering, potty-training, running around after a toddler until your head is spinning ;-) It can be done though.

I would suggest you consult your doctor on this issues before making up your mind. Raising a child is no play thing.

I would also suggest you foster older kids first. Children around 5 can be demanding and classified as little wimps. If you can deal with this - you are good to go!
