Well from first hand experience, and my mother being a Therapist Here is my suggestion... a therapist/counselor are the same thing. Most psychiatrists are not trained in "talk therapy". It sounds as if you might just need some one to help you talk things out, see them differently and work thru some things.. i suggest a therapist... that is what i have always gone to. Psychologists work as well, but tend to be more costly. There is no difference though in their ability to help you. You must also feel comfortable with whom you are speaking with. If you find out after your first session you aren't comfortable, then go else where until you find some one who suits your personality and needs! Be prepared to hear things you may not like, but that's key to understanding things and getting stuff straight! Good Luck@!

Since I work at a mental health clinic, the basic difference is if you may need medication, which you don't seem to need. A Psychiatrist is an M.D. who can prescribe, and some may do therapy and analysis. A Psychologist is also a doctor, but can not prescribe. They can do therapy, and also testing for diagnostic purposes. Therapist and Counselor and interchangeable. You would see MSW, LCSW, ACSW, LPC, LMFT, and at times RN's All of these levels can do talk therapy, help you work out your problems.
Of course with each level of the cost to you or your insurance goes up.

psychiatrists are MDs, and their usual procedure is to give you mood altering drugs (paxil, wellbutrin, whatever).

psychologists are usually not MDs, but PhDs. But I believe they also are bound by the non-disclosure rules that doctors use.

Therapists/social workers/counselors have Master's Degree level of training, and are not necessarily protected by the patient confidentiality laws.

You should also investigate which of these mental health professionals are covered under your health insurance. That could determine who you go see.

Additionally, various people have specific areas they are strongest in and you also need to "click" with the therapist. A bad therapist can do a lot of harm. Trust me on that (BTDT). If you know the general area of your issues, ask the therapist if that's an area they've worked with extensively.

Psychologist. They just talk to you and help you work out issues. A psychiatrist will give you drugs, and therapists and counselors are pretty much the same things as psychologists.

A therapist if you know what the problems are exactly. Behaviour therapy helps with self-defeating (e.g. overcoming self-esteem) or problematic behaviours (e.g. never having enough time to do things on time).

A psychiatrist if the brain is a little too worked up and has gone into major depression and schizoprenia, and need some medication to keep things in check.

A counsellor if you need someone to talk to and to listen.

A clinical psychologist if you have some emotional difficulties.

You call this guy a 'pal' yet you're literally not performing like a pal. If he's gay, he's gay. that does no longer mean there is something incorrect with him. you ought to carry out a touch analyze on what number animals attempt to make with different animals of a similar gender. in case you don't like it, then he benefits extra constructive friends. He got here out to you because he trusts you and needs your help. if you're by no signifies that vulnerable, then make it sparkling to him that you're uncomfortable about it and could not in any respect experience that way about him, yet do not in simple terms call him a freak. He ought to also do not forget that no longer anybody is pleased with the idea of gay human beings yet and not in any respect to flaunt it in the front of you (notwithstanding many ought to argue by assessment, he should be allowed to act how he needs in the front of who he needs, yet in case you consider someone a pal you ought to respect their emotions, no count how...'diverse' they're). respect each and every others emotions, respect you both have diverse critiques and go away it at that.
