Onen study is examining five theories concerning the cause of leukemia: (1) that a deficiency in certain micro nutrients such as folic acid increases the risk; (2) that changes in the age at which children first contract some common infectious diseases affects the later appearance of leukemia; (3) that inborn genetic susceptibility contributes to the disease; (4) that household or workplace chemicals are causing the blood cancer; and (5) that residential exposure to electric and magnetic fields increases the risk of developing the disease.

My daughter was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (also known as acute myelogenous leukemia or AML)shortly after her seventh birthday. She died after nine months treatment.

We were told that there are no provable causes for AML though of late a law firm has advertised on the TV that benzene might be related to many AML cases.

The slow progress of research regarding the cause of AML and other pediatric leukemias astounds me.

I may sound a wee bit cynical here but I have a feeling that there are probably some large corporations which produce things using chemicals which might cause leukemia who would rather we not delve into this issue too deeply.

There is a world renowned doctor in Japan who wanted to find out what all types of cancers have in common. He found three things common to all cancers. Heavy metals, a certain class of chemicals and I forgot the third cause but you might be able to learn more about this on the web. I know there is a lot about heavy metals and cancer just search 'cancer and heavy metals'. Doctors who are studying a new class of phytonutrient called mangosteen juice, and many other researchers, are coming to the conclusion that cancer may be caused by chronic inflammation caused by pollution (which is chemical and heavy metals much of the time) in our air, water, soil and food. For more on this, go to www.pubmed.com (the national medical library) and search 'mangosteen' and 'xanthones'. For first-person accounts of what these xanthones are doing for people, go to www.mangosteenexperiences.com and www.mangosteentestimonials.com.
There was a very good article on chronic inflammation in the Los Angeles Times, Sun, 23 April, 2006 titled "Inflammation as Enemy which focuses on our own U.S. researchers' focus on a common thread (chronic inflammation) which they say may contribute to more than just cancer but also diabetes, heart disease and even Alzheimer's, as well as many other painful conditions such as arthritis.
