My daughter is nine years old and her legs are pretty hairy. Kids at school make fun of her. Should I let her start shaving or wait a few more years. I started shaving when I was 11.

Children are growing at such a fast rate nowadays its mind boggling! If this causes your daughter grief at the torment,I would let her shave. At first she will need your assistance before it becomes second nature. It is a part of grooming.I wouldnt use nair or veet because she is so young and those creams are harsh on adult skin let alone a child.I feel so badly that she has been teased.Kids can be cruel.Just remind her that she is beautiful regardless to the fact.I hope this solves the problem.Good Luck!!!!!!

Yes, 9 is a young age, but a lot of kids are maturing at a faster rate. If she has hairy legs and the other kids are noticing, it is time to let her shave. Make sure she doesn't feel embarrased by her changing body and let her know that it is completely normal. The kids comments could really start to effect her self esteem otherwise.
Go shopping for a cool razor and shaving cream and teach her how to properly do it.

I snuck around and tried to shave on my own when I was 9 because I had the hairy leg syndrome to. After much nicking and cutting, my sister helped me out (I lived with my dad) and told me how to do it without bleeding to death. I think 9 was old enough because of the hairiness, but if kids don't have that problem, I'd wait until they were at least 10 or 11...maybe it could be a double digit privilege!

I really do not agree with some of the the people here saying oh, yes gosh, let her shave now, God forbid someone make fun of her.
If you are raising your daughter with self worth and high self esteem, some hair on her legs is not going to make the world come to an end. 9 years old is still a baby for goodness sake, she's in what 3rd or 4th grade? Not even in junior high yet!!!

I think that shaving your legs is a step into woman hood and should not be taken lightly. When a woman shaves her legs she is doing it to feel sexy. Who touches our legs? Our husbands, boyfriends, or in some cases girlfriends or life partners. No one is going to be touching her legs when she is 9, so what is the point in allowing her to grow up faster than needed? Girls these days are growing up way to fast and becoming sexually active way to fast, this action is just pushing that a little more and just not needed.

The key issue is comfort and feeling secure. You want her to have a positive experience with her maturing body. She may already be teased by friends if the hair is noticable or becoming more apparent. There is no harm in allowing her to shave. She should, however, at this age do so only either with your guided help OR under your supervision. Shaving will not need to recur frequently for some time. How does she feel about the rest of her body? Have you and she begun to discuss what is coming up soon in respect to her changing body (both physically and emotionally)? Do you have the resources you want and need? I am happy to help -- amy_smith_bsw@yahoo.com
Starting to shave from age 9 on is very common today

I'd say about now, I did when I was like 11 or 12. so I think its the right time. At this age, I was made fun of for having hairy legs. It will hurt her self esteem and she might feel like she cant fit in. Besides, you did at 11. How would you feel it you were no able to at that age. You should let her shave her legs :)
Hope I helped:)

If she is hairy and kids at school make fun of her, by all means let her shave. I think everyone started shaving in 4th grade. That's about her age, so that seems to be just fine. Help her and show her how. Good luck

you should let her shave now. Take some time and show her how and how to do it safely.

Age doesnt matter with issues like this. She is hairy and it is making her time at school unenjoyable.
Who cares that you started shaving at 11--your daughter is not you.
Why subject her to be tormented at school? Kids are mean, and your daughter is at an age where she is just developing self esteem...why make her ashamed to wear shorts? In the end you will just make her more self concious if you dont let her shave.

Acceptance from other kids is very important to young girls, if this is something that is setting her apart from everyone else then I would agree that now is a good time to let her start. If her hair was thin or really light colored it would be different, she would be able to wait longer. I let my daughter start shaving at 10. Make sure you show her how and that she understands after she does it for the first time that she will have to keep doing it.

You're the mom so it is ultimately up to you. Does she *want* to shave her legs? If so, I think you should allow her to. Teach her the correct way to shave her legs and buy her a razor that has a safeguard to prevent nicks and cuts. It will probably help her self esteem and make the kids leave her alone. However, it's not sending a great message to her to allow her to cave-in to bullies. I am sure kids at this age don't pay THAT much attention to her legs. If they weren't making fun of that, it would be something else. You wouldn't let her get a nosejob if they were making fun of her nose, would you?
