I am Australian and looking to have a white christmas for my children as it snows in the middle of the year here and not at christmas time.
Would NYC be a good choice for a christmas?

NYC is a great choice for Christmas and for the festivities.
However, your odds of having a White Christmas are pretty low. I've lived in/around NYC all my life. We get a White Christmas occasionally, but if it was 25% of the time, that would be a lot.

If its snow on Christmas that you want, you are probably better off with destinations such as Colorado, the Upper Midwest (Minnesota), New Hampshire, Vermont, or in Western New York (on the East Side of the Great Lakes) where Lake Effect Snow pretty much guarantees a white Christmas.

Yes but we cant promise snow the past year or so we have been lucky where we get such a bad storm right before xmas that snow is still on the ground at xmas. If you would be traveling to the states for a truly white xmas look into colorado or vermont but NYC is wonderful at christmas with or with out snow.

If it doesn't snow, it's ice cold. The buildings are like a canyon, they keep heat in during summer and cold in during winter.

But that's what you want to experience, so you guys should love it.

Pack heavy winter clothes, gloves, scarves to keep warm.

The only thing you might not like about NYC at Christmas is that it is PACKED. I'm talking busy. It's like everybody from all points of the world are in the city for the holidays (especially because New Year's Eve is only 1 week after Xmas).

You'll have fun, but keep your eyes on the kids and pay attention to keep safe and warm. It's worth everything to do it at least once in your lifetime. Your kids will LOVE the city.

Christmas in NYC is beautiful. I am native New Yorker and it doesn't get any better than this, especially for kids. There is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Show..the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree..the displays in stores up fifth avenue and of course...the snow and great shopping.

Christmas in NYC is great. Bring a lot of money, and a ton of patience. It is crowded.

But your chances of seeing a while christmas are very slim. I've been here 20+ years and can't remember the last time we had snow around Christmas.

I'm a native New Yorker, and have spent a couple of Christmases away from my hometown. I tell ya...I realized that I'm "ruined" from growing up in NYC and enjoying the best-dressed, Xmas city in the world.
The animated window displays at Macy's, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. St. Patrick's Cathedral (continuous hymns and songs). Rockefeller Center with its famous outdoor skating rink under the tallest, decorated Xmas tree that you'll ever see. You can go iceskating in Central Park (during the day/night) too (go inside to warm up with hot chocolate and other warm goodies). Then continue to the Central Park Zoo to check out the polar bear swimming in its windowed dive pool.
The gigantic crystal snowflake that dangles on 58th Street and Fifth Avenue by Tiffany's. Gorgeously lit at night. Basically you will see well-decorated fir trees in every office building that you're pass by. Go and play at FAO Schwartz's gigantic toy store, the INDOOR ferris wheel at Toy's R Us in Times Square, the toy FLOOR in Macy's.
Downtown in lower Manhattan, the South St Seaport will have Santa Clauses walking about and greeting children. Choirs pile up on to Xmastree-shaped stands and sing wonderful Xmas songs several times a day.
At the Winter Garden atrium, you will see beautiful, crystal lights strung up elegantly in the air above the indoor stand of 9 palm trees.
Your kids would love it, and love the shopping, and be SO dazzled and exhausted by all the activities (and crowds). But a SNOWY white Xmas...ah...that's very rare. With global warming, it doesn't snow in NYC much.
When I was a kid, I recall 2-foot snow drifts and no school! Come to NY at Xmas, and you'll be ruined forever too.
