My family has been invited to this dinner event at a luxury hotel (it frequently accommodates celebrities). I checked the restaurant out (http://www.fourseasons.com/toronto/dining.html), and the dress code says "Smart Casual".
The problem is, I don't know what to wear. My husband and two kids, boy (age 10) and girl (age 14) have been invited. My husband usually wears only jeans and a simple t-shirt to work, and I usually wear chic and trendy clothes, they're not business or casual like. My kids, well, they just wear normal casual clothes that you see all the other kids wearing--jeans, t-shirt, capris. We don't really know what "smart casual" is and would really like some help.
If you have been to these events before, could you please tell us the dress code? I don't want to wear my normal casual clothes and be prejudiced by the staff (my friend was!). It would be really wonderful if you could give us some pointers or ideas that comply with the dress code. Thanx.

For your husband I would suggest a sensible tennis shirt tucked into trousers. Some guys aren't comfortable wearing and coordinating ties, so tennis shirts are great--the whole tie dilemma goes right out the window. Trousers could be anything, barring denim. Gray flannel never goes out of style and looks great with a sports jacket. And, though a jacket is perfectly acceptable, at this time of year it's also uncomfortable in most climes. Khaki's, in America and Canada at least, are regarded as more formal than jeans but less formal than flannel, so should be acceptable for this event. Loafers or Boat shoes would be a good choice in footwear if he decides on the chinos. He might even get away with sandals, though I'd caution against them. If a more traditional pair of trousers are put in play then obviously go with a pair of brogues or half-brogues.
My philosophy is: When in doubt it's better to dress up than to dress down.

OK smart casual.
I strongly recommend u to first found what others are gonna wear because if u are to casual it`s gonna feel bad but if u go tooo overdress u are gona feel worst.
well this is a tip for those kind of ambiguous invitations, be sure that u are wearing something that need ironing.
a nice late afternoon dress in some soft color not short but never, never floor length, for ur husband a dress pants and a jacket if its casual he don`t need wear tie (again check this whit other males attending to the event since I don´t know all) a dress shirt of a nice color will help, for ur girl is a must be dress since its dinner the tennis shoes are out of order, a simple dress and a nice hair fix all, OK for ur kid since he is very young dress shirt and a khakis should do and well boys shoes are always comfortable Hope it help. u can check more if see sites as Kenneth Cole and Banana Republic. well think preppy

Of course you can, you could maybe wear some smart jeans, with a nice blouse, your hair nice, maybe add some heels and jewelry in? I wouldn't recommend the jeggings, though I don't know what you look like or suit... personally I don't think jeggings are as classy, especially for a "smart-casual" party. Also, with the leggins, there quite plain aren't they? Just Black. Therefore you could wear these, through on a top that will stand out, a nice one, and again maybe add somejewelryy and heels in? Hope I helped, and have fun at the party!

usually smart-casual excludes jeans and trainers. For your husband, probably a pair of slacks and a shirt and tie, with a jacket.
Your chic and trendy clothes sound fine for yourself.
The kids, its a little trickier, but for girls I'd suggest a dress and shoes, and for boys non-jeans pants if possible and a smart T-shirt or open-neck shirt or polo shirt.
I think its a question of kinda looking a bit smarter than if you were having a backyard barbecue, but not as dressed-to-kill if you were going to a "ball".
Anyway, here's a couple of links that may help a little too.

Smart Casual also puts in the same frame of mind as business causal. Black pair of pants nice top or blouse, your husband could wears slacks(pressed)either a polo or shirt and tie. The kids could basically dress like the both of you. A nice dress for your daughter or pair of pants and nice top and slacks or khaki's pants for your son and polo or tennis shirt. Good luck!!

Don't wear jeans nor sneakers.
If I were you I'd wear a lovely floral dress, same for your daughter and your son may put on a shirt and pants.

it means a professional , conservative look. One suggestion is wearing a collared shirt, ironed or pressed, and a pair of slacks. That is simple. I usually wear a long sleeve oxford shirt, slacks, and a belt.

I would think it's the same as business casual. A nice pantsuit would be good.
