Believe it or not, my engagement ring was a black onyx as I did not want a diamond.
However, I wear the diamond now because my husband purchased a wedding set, since my original engagement ring was not a set.

My husband only spent a few hundred dollars on the whole wedding set. My engagement ring which I wore for ten months before the wedding had a 1/4 carat diamond in it. The stone is in a setting which is then place in the larger setting. I have to turn my hand from side to side so people can see that there is a diamond in it. It is tiny.
And I wouldn't have it any other way. He found the ring that he thought would be perfect. He could have spent more on it but wanted to give me this one. Spend whatever you like. Go to the store, talk to the clerk, and find the perfect one. Don't look at the prices until after you pick one out. It sounds like you can afford a good amount. After you see the price tag you may not love it quite as much and that's fine. But price isn't what matters. It is how it looks on your girlfriend's / fiancee's finger and how you both feel about it.

It is such a personal choice. I would decide on the amount and start from there. Has she given you any ideas what she likes? Simple things you can research like the cut, clarity, color, etc the nicer each is the pricier the ring. Also the material of the ring can add to the cost - platinum is more expensive than white gold. You can spend what you want. I don't buy into the two months of a salary and I think some say 3 now. The main thing is to check with your sweetie and find out what her expectations are and go from there. Also, find a jeweler you trust. Good luck.

When it comes to weddings and engagements, there are rules to the end of time. First of all, the cost shouldn't matter, it's the meaning that's important. Second, decide on a style - solitaire, multi-stone, metal. I suggest maybe talking to your sweetheart to see if there is a particular ideal that she has been dreaming of. Third, how much would you be comfortable with spending? It's your money - you know what you can and can't do with it. Pick a price range that is feasible for you and the style intended.
The possibilities are endless. It's your life, write your own rules. :)

Equal to Two months wages so for an 80K job, after taxes about 10K for the ring, Hey I was only making 15K a year and bought my wife a 2k ring which is twomonths wages. but if she isn't into extravegance get a smaller rock, but better quality. My girl only has a .5 carat, but it's one of the highest quality diamonds

There's no amount that you have to spend on a ring. It depends on the style she likes and what you can afford. I would say around $1000 is pretty average for an engagement ring (unless you're getting her one with lots of bling!). My ring is a sapphire because that's my favorite stone and it only cost $300!

I think it's not the amount spent that matters for a woman, but the style of the ring. I went "looking" with my future husband, so he knew the kind of style I wanted (larger centre stone flanked by smaller ones), but then he could get it in the price range he wanted. Remember to do your research - you can get large imperfect stones that look impressive to the naked eye, or small perfect stones that you know are better.

I think convention has it at 2 to 3 months salary -- BUT I say it really depends on your gf -- since you can get a really good quality diamond that's smaller in size ... OR a huge diamond in lesser quality. Unless she is envisioning a huge diamond and of good quality --- you might be in trouble :(
May want to "casually" talk about it -- just to see what kind of diamond gal she is :D Good luck!

i'm not sure if this is right but i think you are supposed to spend half of what you would spend on the wedding on the ring, and if that's not it then just spend like 5,000 that will get her a nice ring.
