I doubt there is any know what God's ultimate plan was, or is. The question is one sort of like the old philisophical question. "If you had a ship, and over the years every part of the ship had been replaced...and you then went and gathered up all the pieces of the ship that had been replaced and put them back together, which would be the real ship? The first on never ceased to exsist, but then the other is just as real." Its a question with no answer...at least not one that you can point to and say this is the only answer.
We were told by Him that "My ways are as far above your ways, and my thoughts as far above your thoughts, as your thoughts are above the worms of the field.
That being said...its kind of hard for us to grasp much of what He intends, beyond what He actually tells us.

Adam and Eve were childlike in the Garden, not knowing Good from Evil. They could not multiply because they didn't have the knowledge. But they could not die. So if they hadn't partaken of the fruit, it would still be just the two of them in the Garden. We don't even know how long they were there before they did eat the fruit, so the earth may well be billions of years old.
God couldn't create anything imperfect, so he created a way for man and woman to be able to die (to return to live with him).

I marvel at some of the answers that were given. But I can not help but to comment. First all you have to know what fruit Eve ate and believe me, it was not the fruit that you can consume with your mouth. (eating) the fruit she ate was the fruit of lies. Hosea 10 13v. There were two trees that was in the garden. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the Tree Of Life. Question, how do you consume a book? by eating it? NO by reading it. Eve consume lies that was told to her by satan. He told her that she would not surely but since she ate (listen) to the wrong tree man kind has been dieing every since. No GOD did not have a plan for her to do that. GOD has a plan to save man kind after man has committed suicide if JESUS had not come and died for the sins of man, this whole world would have been destroyed. GOD could have wipe man off the face of this earth. So in conclusion, Eve did not eat fruit, she ate the fruit of lies.

God gave humans free will. He set a simple rule down for Adam and Eve, and they chose to violate it. If they had not, they would have done as God commanded them, to have children and fill the earth with their offspring, and to turn the entire earth into an Eden-like paradise.
God's purpose hasn't changed. How it will be accomplished is through the resurrection made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus.

The story of Adam and Eve is just a story. The author did not intend it to be read as a history book. Whether there were 2 people or not in the beginning is not relevant. What is relevant is the message of the story - that Man chose to disobey God and was cast out of paradise.

Answer to First question:
If Eve hadn't a eaten the fruit, Adam probably wouldn't a either. Adam thought he was losing his Wife, it was a really Big Love thing, bigger than Romeo and Juliet.
p.s. If only Eve woulda' eaten it, and not Adam, she coulda' been RESTORED, Eve was Decieved, Adam went into it Eye's Wide Open. So sad, so sad.

There's a good book about this in a SF trilogy by CS Lewis. The 2nd book in the series - they stand alone well - is called Voyage to Venus. It's about an unfallen world. A beautiful and fun book.

If you take the story seriously, it had to happen... God is omnicient... he knows everything that has and will ever happen. He knew even before creating the earth that this would happen. Hell, by that logic he even knew that Jesus would be killed at the same time. He knew he'd have to kill everyone off with a flood.
It's just a story, it never happened.

Sounds good! However, it had nothing to do with the fruit. It was about disobeying God. God said:
Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
......................................
Truth of every kind makes free, while lies bind up in bonds. Ignorance also binds up, because it gives ground to Satan. Man's ignorance is a primary and essential condition for deception by evil spirits. The ignorance of the people of God concerning the powers of darkness, has made it easy for the devil to carry out his work as deceiver. Unfallen man in his pure state was not perfect in knowledge. Eve was ignorant of "good and evil," and her ignorance was a condition which lent itself to the deception of the serpent.
The devil's great purpose, and for which he fights, is to keep the world in ignorance of himself, his ways, and his colleagues, and the Church is taking sides with him when siding with ignorance about him. Every man should keep an attitude of openness to all truth, and shun the false knowledge which has slain its tens of thousands, and kept the nations in the deception of the devil.
