If you don't know, please don't reply as I'm in dire straights right now. My daughter's hair is breaking off little by little....and in my eyes, badly.

She's lost half the length of her ponytails in the span of 1 year.
She's 7 her hair is still natural. I've been using "Lets Jam" for fly aways...is this bad? Also, summer camp has her in the pool alot - but breakage continued during the school year... I'm at a loss.
Here is my regiment, please advise what I'm doing wrong...

1. I wash her hair once a week
(for caucasions I suppose you would think this is gross, but black hair doesn't make oils as fast, so everyday washing isn't necessary for us as you may do).

2. I moisterize her scalp, towel dry and plat the damp hair to allow it to air dry (no blow dryers, curling irons or hot combs).

3. I comb and brush her hair daily (baretts/braids/ the like...) every morning before school.

I think I'm doing a good job.
Any suggestions? Products? Regiments I may not be aware o

try using cod liver oil once a week on her scalp before going to bed use a plastic shower cap and rinse in the morning. I know it doesn't smell good but it is fantastik forgrowing hairr and it will strenghthen it .

make sure her hair is dry before you braid speciallt near the scalp.

Bepending on her hair use coconutoil or olive oil as a moisturizer.

allow hair to breath, use no products on her hair on days she is home.
Also check her diet is she getting enough fish and veggies?
keep her away from fried foods.

J/a/s/o/n products are very good you can buy them at a whole foods wild oats heath food type of store.

Everybody seems to be on the mark here, just a couple more suggestions I didn't see: Make sure you are brushing her hair throughly. Try using an oil-based grease or lotion (luster's pink oil moisterizer is great!) or good old-fashioned soft sheen or blue magic. Also go ahead and braid it up for a week at a time. keep it clean, brushed, and braided and it should do great!

I checked when I got home last night, and the other hair grease is called Johnson's Ultra Sheen. It's been around forever and works great!

She should be wearing a bathing cap. I know is sounds stupid, but the cholorine in the pool is damaging her hair. It takes years to grow out a length of hair that has been damaged. Thats why its still breaking during the school year. The other option is to have her spray conditioner (1/2 water, 1/2 conditioner in a spray bottle) on her hair before goin into the pool. Even though Im white, my daughter has tons of breakage all year long if she doesnt wear a cap.

I agree with you...You seem to be doing a good job with her hair. The only thing I would suggest is that you moisturize the entire hair with hair oil and not just her scalp. Dax is a great option fro breaking hair. Use this once or twice a week. If her hair is breaking, this means that it is brittle. Brittle hair needs extra oil for extra strength. I hope this helps.

Another option would be to have her checked out by a dermotologist. Eczema could also cause very dry, brittle hair.

Good Luck.

She may respond badly to the "lets jam" because it seems to me that you are doing everything you should. Sometimes the alcohol in some gels dry out our hair and makes it break. check the jam to see if there is alot of alcohol in it. also you may want to do styles that dont require you to comb her hair everyday. Like braiding her natural hair and doing that once a week. Sometimes some people just cant have their hair handled everyday. Besides all that, how is her diet? Is she getting alot of water and fruits and vegetables? Sometimes that seriously affects your hair and the things it does...good luck

Make sure when you wash the hair you always use a conditioner after, it does not matter if it's wash out or stay in.
There are many curl nuetralizers that is good for a 7 years old and they stay in the hair for only 10 min. I believe what I use is called African Pride.

Use hair lotion and try braiding it so it is not being pulled at and stressed out so much.
