Well, while I acknowledge that I am not unfamiliar with the phenomenon you have observed it is not true in my case, as my own salary has been published annually on the internet for some years by a group called Guidestar. They publish the IRS 990 forms for all non-profit organizations in the country, and my employer is a non-profit. As the forms include salary information for the higher paid employees at each organization and I have been around long enough (27 years) to have become one of the higher paid employees in our organization, my salary is published. Accordingly, I long ago shed any sensitivity on the issue, as the information is available to anyone who cares to look it up.
As to your suggestion that no one ever gives the number, I am afraid you will have to amend that generalization to almost never--the number is $126,000.

Knowing others salary can cause problems. Once I found out that somebody with half the experience I had was making more money than me. I raised hell and eventually got my pay raised, but the company would have rather I never knew I was getting cheated.
Other people may not want to discuss their salary for fear they will be looked down upon. People often live above their means or hold jobs that sound better than they actually are. For example some biologists make around $40,000 a year.
But.......I work for FEMA and make $45,000 a year. There's you a number.

Because not everyone starts out the same- some may get more an hr then others depending on experience- and at most jobs the employees are not to discuss with one another what they get hourly or what they get for salary

Most businesses do not allow discussions of salary within the workplace and many employers will fire you if they find out you are talking about it. Usually it is because they often hire new people at higher salaries than older employees.

Because people are really judgmental. The price tag on someone's salary can change the relationships they have with people. If they make a lot, people might be jealous and angry, or cling on to them because they are wealthy. If they don't make very much it's embarrassing and then people show pity which is completely aggravating! Best to keep it to yourself.

I always say how much I make...I dont care...People like that either don't make anything or make to much....Us normal middle class people should be proud of what we bring to the table wether its $8.00 an hr or $20.00 an hr...at least we dont go around saying I just got $300.00 in food stamps ....like it was a pay check...
