Depends on the salary.
In the US they expect one to spend 2 months salary.... but if you are making over $5K per month, a $10,000 ring is too much.
When I got engaged, 10 years ago, I was making more than that. The jeweller, a friend of mine suggested I spend about $3000 on a nice ring. Anything more, would increase teh chances of my wife getting mugged. My wife and I work in NYC.
$3000 will be about 1400 pounds, I think.

Even though you want it to look nice, its really not about the quantity value but the quality of the ring and the love that you both share. If the husband can afford a very nice ring then he should buy it. If someone is not as blessed, than the wife should be appreciative of the ring they receive until the husband if able to buy another ring if he chooses to do so. It's just the engagement ring...The wedding ring should be priceless.

It is not about the amount of money that is spent on any item whether it be a ring or the actually wedding. It is the reason for the ring that is important !
My ENGAGEMENT ring cost £6.99 from Argos and is so special.
My WEDDING ring cost £9.99 from Argos and it is perfect.
I would have let him put a rubber band on my finger when we got married as it is a symbol of your commitment to one another not a chance to show how much money you have.
When I got married our whole wedding cost less than £5,000. When my sister in law got married they spent over £15,000 and the marriage lasted 6 weeks !!!!
So money is not an issue - make sure the ring is purchased for the right reason and not the price tag.

Why does the cost matter so much to you ? A £1,000 ring wouldn't mean he loves you anymore than a £100 ring. Chill out, Why not save the money to a nice holiday ? Some people cannot afford expensive rings - that doesn't mean they don't love you.

My brother is proposing next week to his girl in Las Vegas. His ring is being custom made, I think he got a deal, cause his friends the jeweler and it cost 8,000 dollars. But its probably will appraise at 12,000.

It's supposed to be a months salary. Guess it depends on how much he earns. Mine wasn't wasn't that much, but I like the ring and what it means to us rather than it's price tag. It's something you're (hopefully) gonna be wearing fo rthe rest of your life, so it's gotta be something you love and can visualise yourself wearing when you're old and grey!!

2 months salary is the general idea. My friend said when he saw the ring he picked out for his fiancee that it didn't matter what it cost because it was ring that she deserved.
