Its seems to be split. Jesus told the repentant theif "Today, you will be with me in Paradise" and Paul says "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" these leas some to believe a saved person will instantly go to heaven upon death. Others believe they soul sleeps until judgement since there is a resurrection. Regardless, if the soul sleeps until judgement, it will seem instant. Like you dont have a concept of time when sleeping.

I don't know what other Christians believe, but I believe judgment day in the bible refers to the day we die. I believe that it occurs right after death and you go to a place based on your judgment.
I think part of my belief comes from my experiences as a Nurse. More in particular in Hospice.
I have seen some patients who were dying and they all have expressed a similar experience. It's quite interesting what goes on with some of them. They don't see the room, they see other places, and other people who when told to relatives it was discovered that they had been deceased many years before. Some of them got real happy right before they passed. I think the name for it is deathbed visions. Scientist claim it's the dying brain, but it's not that simple. I think people who die, move on to another place right away.

I am currently reading a book by Randy Alcorn called "Heaven" which is a culmination of 25 years of research on all biblical references to Heaven. His findings suggest that there is a temporary heaven where all believers go to immediately when they die. But the final and eternal heaven is called "new earth" which we will enter in to after the judgement.
There are references to martyrs in the temporary heaven crying out against persecution of Christians, which suggests that they are more aware of the human situation than we are currently, and they are also waiting in anticipation for God to avenge their deaths in the judgment of their persecutors. It's actually quite fascinating.

Wow, you got a lot of answers in the first five minutes and not one gave you a scripture reference. Here it is; you don't go straight to heaven unless you've been martyred where you get to wait underneath the throne of God. Otherwise, while you are dead you sleep, so what is as many as 1000's of years will feel like an instant. To be absent from the body is to be with the Lord.

Right after death you go to a spiritual paradise, where Jesus judges you according to how you served Him. Then a new body is created for you and joined with your spirit later on in heaven. Judgment Day is reserved for unbelievers.

The bible teaches that our breath goes back to God at the time of death. It takes a body and the breath of life to form a living spirit It also teaches that at Christ's coming he will have our reward with him which leads me to believe that we are judged when he returns. The bible tells of some that were awaken from their "sleep" when Christ was called from the tomb. Also Enoch and Moses are in heaven according to the word. Moses represents the righteous that will be raised and Enoch represents the ones that will be translated without seeing death.

Well I thought the Bible said that we would "sleep" until the day of the resurrection and the second coming of Christ on earth, on which day we would be judged according to our works in the flesh and our faith in Jesus Christ...

but every denomination seems to feel differently so maybe it would help to narrow it down a little more from "Christian"

and honesty, nobody on earth can really truly claim to know anything like that, other than what you can interpret from scripture.

2nd Corinthians 5:1, Romans 8:11, Phillipians 1:21 also when the thief on the cross asked Jesus to remember him, Jesus said Today, you will be with me in paradise. I believe you pass from here to there right away. Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

you go to the spirit world until judgement day. Then you will be judged and placed accordingly. Also there is more than just heaven and hell. There are different levels of judgement with only the highest being reunited with god in heaven.
