However many rings it takes to get to the phone. I try to get it before the answering machine picks up.

Usually only two, long enough for the caller ID to kick in and I can see if I'm picking up or letting the machine do it's thing.

Four. I screen ALL my calls (goddam telemarketers who have ignored the Do Not Call list) and that is when the machine picks up.
