when the former spouse was put away for fornication (harlotry, sexual sin)

"And I say to you, that whoever shall put away his wife,
>>>except it be for fornication,<<<
and marries another,
commits adultery;
and whoever marrying a divorcee commits adultery."
(Mat 19:9)

thank goodness our Lord spelled it out plainly enough for us.

Paul also says to let the unbeliever leave and that the believer is not in bondage to them.
This shows that there ARE indeed circumstances where the believer is 'free' (not a slave) to a union with a nonbeliever.

a freed slave has no master....a wife 'not in bondage' to an unbelieving deserting husband has no husband.

The spirit of the law presents that a man who beats his wife, showing no fruits of salvation, is an unbeliever.

additionally...this 'adultery' isnt unforgivable.

If you did remarry for whatever reasons and even if the reasons werent proper at the time, simply repentance is all thats required.

Nowhere does Paul or Jesus command that a wife leave her second husband to return to the first.
If you have repented to God (IF you even committed any wrong), then you are forgiven and should live in your current marriage being the best spouse you can be.

Just Me, don't listen to this crap about marriage, divorce and remarriage, religion is a man made product and they just can't keep their noses out of everyone else's business. You stay happy and safe with your man, I am with mine now for 28 years and the other SOB can just bite it.
Anyone that takes the time to discuss this stupid question has got to be the biggest idiot walking.

"It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.' But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." (Matthew 5:31-32)

"I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery." (Matthew 19:9)

The Old Testament commandment (Deut 24:1-5) that a bill of divorce be given to the woman assumes the legitimacy of divorce itself. It is this that Jesus denies.

(Unless the marriage is unlawful): this "exceptive clause," as it is often called, occurs also in Matthew 19:9, where the Greek is slightly different.

There are other sayings of Jesus about divorce that prohibit it absolutely (see Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18; cf 1 Cor 7:10, 11b), and most scholars agree that they represent the stand of Jesus.

Matthew's "exceptive clauses" are understood by some as a modification of the absolute prohibition.

It seems, however, that the unlawfulness that Matthew gives as a reason why a marriage must be broken refers to a situation peculiar to his community: the violation of Mosaic law forbidding marriage between persons of certain blood and/or legal relationship (Lev 18:6-18).

Marriages of that sort were regarded as incest (porneia), but some rabbis allowed Gentile converts to Judaism who had contracted such marriages to remain in them.

Matthew's "exceptive clause" is against such permissiveness for Gentile converts to Christianity; cf the similar prohibition of porneia in Acts 15:20, 29.

In this interpretation, the clause constitutes no exception to the absolute prohibition of divorce when the marriage is lawful.

With love in Christ.

I'm continuously amazed by this verse. It's one of my all time favorites.

What I wonder is... let's say people divorce and they get married to other people... and the other people, by Jesus' own words are adulterers... if they repent, yet continue to live in adultery, will they make it into heaven? Paul clearly said that adulterers will have their place in the lake of fire... just another curiosity.

I'm sure there are more than enough reasons none of this is really the way it is... I'm equally certain Jesus' blood washes away all of this... but it's just interesting that we don't have people trying to pass laws against this sort of thing.

So in spite of the fact that my ex husband was physically, verbally, emotionally abusive, absent most of the time and jealous of the fact that i wanted to breastfeed my baby, drunk and stoned all the time, I'm still going to hell because i kicked him out and married a wonderful man that became a father to my daughter and has never treated either one of us bad? Doesn't god have mercy or grace?

Thankyou Milrae1116
