VERRRRY GOOD QUESTION. I really wish I knew the answer to that. Maybe it's a trick from Saten. He knows the commandments of the lord but he makes us think that it nothing wrong to useGOD's name so literally the way we do.

Splinterjah,
As far as cursing goes, it is pretty hard to remember what not to say, when you have just flattened your thumb with a large hammer. Our mind is overcome by the waves of pain sent out by the nerves. What is more of an issue for me, is that nobody understands the true meaning of the third commandment. We have all been told that taking God's name in vain means using it as a curse word. Nothing could be further from the truth. First of all, His name is not God, that is His title. If you read the third commandment with an inquiring mind, and consider the meaning of the words at the time of Moses, it will become clear. Back then, as now in marraige, when you became attached to a clan or family, as a slave, a bride, or an adopted child, you took the name of that family, or the head of the family. When we take God's name, we are saying that we are His. We have entered into a relationship with Him, that is permanent, and personal. We have become His children. If you do this just to join a church, or to make yourself more respectable, or for any reason but love, you have taken His name in vain. You have said that you are attached to Him, and given Him all authority in your life, but it is a lie. He says that those who do so, will not be found guiltless. I seriously doubt that God will remove His mercy from you because you said the wrong words during a moment of pain, and then had remorse about it. The commandment means "Don't be a fake follower of God, it won't do you a bit of good".

It isn't meant in a harmful way. People who are not Christians don't generally think of it as such. For us it is more of the definition of what a God is. God means something powerful and unexplainable and generally when it is used it is meant to enunciate something or used in a moment of surprise. So here is the connection. God is loosely defined as something strong so using it in a sentence as in "oh my god" it is makes the sentence stronger. The only reason for it is the punch behind it. Why not use other religions Gods? Well because it is an American phrase and America was founded on Christianity so it is in our roots. Subconsciously God is the most powerful word as it is a word we all know very well... Allah, and budda and stuff like that is more of a fairy tale or story than anything else so it doesn't have quite the effect that God does. As a christian don't focus on the non-Christians use of the phrase as it will do no good for us but you should continue to remind your fellow Christians as I know many young christian tend to fall into using bad language often.

I think it's because the bible says not to...people tend to be a little rebellious. Some guy at some point in time gets mad at god and curses god...just caught on. Same way other curse words get started.
I saw a show once where a lady said "O my Budda" she was a self-rightious prick. Her reasoning was that if she was going to curse a god it was going to be someone else's god. Maybe I saw that on the Colbert Report...but it was one of the make fun of the person type interviews.

These statements evolved as an important part of our lexicon not because they are curses; actually, they are prayers. If you call out, "Jesus!" in response to a car almost hitting you, you're actually calling to Jesus for help. At least, that's how the usage originated. It makes sense, when you think about it - in a time of need, you call on the Lord. The problem is that most people aren't actually calling on the Lord when they say "Jesus"; instead, they're just using a word that's become part of typical American English.
The idea of "cursing" is more related statements like "God dammit". When you say this, you're actually praying to God that he damn the thing that's making you angry. If your computer freezes up and you say "God dammit!", then you're cursing your computer by asking God to damn it. Again, most folks aren't actually praying to God when they say "God Dammit", they're just using a phrase that has become typical in American English.
But originally, all of these exclamations were intended as prayers. None of them has the purpose of cursing GOD. Instead, they are calls to him.

I'm not a Christian, but I try not to say that. It's not using it as a curse-word,it's just kind of slang. But,if you think about it,god is not a specific name. You can talk about statues of different gods,or ancient people worshiped the sun god.And who said that his name is in English? That's just the English word that's most common. So,don't beat yourself up over it.And thank you for the suggestion about Hitler. That could be the ultimate insult, don't you think?

why do people curse in the first place? to express anger or frustration in a way that will shock people, or make them feel uncomfortable.
Everyone would Amen! if someone used Hitler as a swear word because hes kind of the commonly recognizable bad guy.

Jesus Christ Mickey mom Mouse why do not you strike me down with lightning .This sounds clone of the blood thirsty outlook of yet another christian devil that purely under no circumstances has figured all of it out yet. it is ineffective to believe that there is a personal God even as it truly is only a figment of the mind's eye. All Gods are in ineffective .

Those who love Him don't curse (or mock) Him.
The rest are servants of the spirit that hates Him, they work for the devil and usually don't know it. There are only two spiritual powers, we are on one side or the other.

the 10 commandments. Satan tells people that if they would be free they can and must disobey God. This of course is what God terms SIN. Of course people want to believe Satan and do not want to believe God.
