Spuds was a bull terrier. I believe the Target dog is as well, though I'm having trouble recalling the ads with any clarity. See if this is the dog you're thinking of...

it is a english bull terrier... we have two ...one star she has a black spot under her right eye first it looked like a teardrop -she was on the www. -now it is like a heart ..... and bullet he is red and white.... they are COOL dogs.. my favorite by far.... have had a few breeds ..... they are neat...takes a special type of person to handle them.....
