It's not a good idea, because some people give very bad advice. But maybe they can't afford to go to the Dr.

Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone who doesn't know you. There are several reasons why this may be. First of all, a person who doesn't know you will be totally impartial and unbiased regarding your personal problems. Second of all, it's less embarrassing. Also, on here, you're pretty much anonymous, so revealing your problems here may feel much less threatening than approaching a family member/friend.

Some people may use this as a 'first step to getting help' sort of thing. They may simply be looking for someone they don't know, to confirm that they should seek help and that they are not simply over exaggerating. Once several people agree that the person should seek help, the person in question may be more inclined to approach a family member, friend or health professional, knowing that they are not just imagining their own problems.

Then again, there are always going to be those who are just looking for attention, or playing a cruel joke on other members.

*shrugs*

While posting such serious things online may not be for everybody, it can definitely help some people. However, those who use it should also be cautious, as there are always going to be people who are ignorant or who have bad intentions, who will suggest negative ideas.

But in the end, having such a service available online has the potential to help a lot of people in need of a good talk who, for one reason or another, feel hesitant to approach those who know them in person.

Perhaps they feel that they may find someone who is going through the same thing and can give some comfort or advice. Not all families or friends are understanding. If I can help one person by sharing my insight or experience(not that it is expert or perfect) then it makes me feel good.
I generally come here for some mental stimulation and fun but I am willing to help if I can.
