Maybe the light came out of his mouth and when he opened his mouth to speak for the first time in ever light came out.
I'm sorry. I'm reaching here but I can't help them on this one.

I think it is a mistake to get caught up in semantics. Have you prayed for understanding?
I look at the whole situation this way. Lets say that you had a huge project first had to obtain permits, second you had to dig foundations, next you had to pour the foundations, etc.... What would you call each step? Maybe steps, or phases, or stages, or maybe even days. So when it says 6 days for the construction of the earth, is that to be taken literally or only a representation of the 6 stages in the construction. There are some phases of any project that take longer that others. Some phases can be worked on simultaneously. For arguments sake lets say that the sun project was commenced on day 1 but not completed until day/stage 4. Just a thought.

I'll assume that you're not actually questioning "how" God did something - I don't think anyone on this earth could answer as to the methods God uses.
As for the light existing before the sun, I think of it like money existing before banks were established - or like a cake tasting sweet because it contains the sugar that existed before the cake was made. Likewise, God allowed the light to exist, then the light was designed into the creation of the stars/sun. His son, Jesus Christ, was also referred to as the "light" - which seems to indicate that his son existed since the first day.
You ask an interesting question, which leads into why God put so much detail into creating all this around us, then sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to die for our salvation. How magnificent is God's love for all of us!

God Himself is light, and in Revelation it talks about there being no sun, because of this fact. It was evidently the same at the beginning of creation as well.
Rev. 22:5 'and there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them'
I have also heard it argued that this was so that God would be recognized as the sustainer of the universe, instead of the Sun being seen in that role & therefore, worshipped.

The glory of God is light. See Revelation 21:23 concerning the New Jerusalem: "The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light." (New King James Version)

wow, what a bunch of scholars we have here.
let me get this straight... usually we associate the sun with light? hmm. by gosh, I think you may have a point! Incredible! I wonder why no-one realized this before!
oh oh, and what's that, "plants use light to grow"~. You're right! They do! Its so funny that 3000 years ago when the bible was written by people who did more farming in a day then we do in our entire lives could have somehow missed this point that light is required for plants to grow.
Wow, yahoo answers truly has a collection of some incredibly ingenius and novel minds. I applaud the brilliance of you all.

I think that on Day 1, God made His glory apparent, putting it into time and space. When He created the sun, the sun took over, and the glory became localized, as in the tabernacle and temple. Now it is invisible to most, but apparent through spiritual impressions.

Sooooooo, in being that the Creator is Light as God is
and
in being that light is determined to be invisible as the Creator
and
in being that we mere human beings were created benevolently in the .."image and likeness thereof'...
is or are
that which we truly are
is invisible ?.....
as the words we speak and air we breathe ?
Or are we all just " trippin' " on things we cannot see
other than by trippin the light
that comes to be seen as nothing more
than us
and
us
all alone ?
Just Trippin
verses 26 and 27 are a trip in that people were created in the chapter before the...walk in the garden and the need for someone to do some work..
namely,
Adam
Thanks for pointing your inquiry out.right-on.
Peace.

It's worth noting that according to the Big Bang theory, the first light in the universe predates the sun as well.

Day one sun also, day four the heavens were made transparent?
It does not read that way.Still that would be my best guess as God says he separated the day from the night and the sun and the moon are given as the mechanism.
