People say "thank god" all the time...even I say it, as a force of habit. I am trying to drop this into casual conversation and as a conversation starter. Do you think it will catch on, or is it as moribund as the "Brights" ?

williamzo...thanks for playing, but quoting fairy tales out of context isn't an intelligent response.

My main point isn't to "stick it" to Xtians. It's just a part of normal conversation automatically saying "thank god" and I wanted to have another saying to use in situartion where others might say thank god, as I don't want to perpetuate the fiction of it's existense, even passively....Thank Ned

What about "thank nothing" or "thank the void" or "thank goodness" or "oh my self" instead of oh my god.

Why bring "deity" into your saying if you want to distance yourself from it?

People will just ask you who Ned is ... you'll get tired of explaining it.

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.

18"There is no judgment awaiting those who trust him. But those who do not trust him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God. 19Their judgment is based on this fact: The light from heaven came into the world, but they loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20They hate the light because they want to sin in the darkness. They stay away from the light for fear their sins will be exposed and they will be punished. 21But those who do what is right come to the light gladly, so everyone can see that they are doing what God wants."

If you're absolutely sure that God doesn't exist, why do you feel such a pressing need to assign a name to Him?

Is it because deep down inside you know that He's real?

Or are just trying to "stick it" to people who believe in Him? If so, why don't you just show a little tolerance and respect for others' beliefs while maintaining your own beliefs?

This is probably not politically correct, but I keep a running list of the various deities in my head (Apollo, Zeus, Ra, God, Allah, Athena, etc..) as well as some incorrect versions (Jebus, Abba, Glod, etc...).

I rotate through that mental list everytime I give thanks for something. Usually only in the company of friends though -- don't want to offend strangers...

Examples include:
"Oh sweet, I got my paycheck, PRAISE ALLAH!"
"Wow, I just missed squishing that squirrel with my bike, THANK POSEIDON!"
"I passed my chem test! HAIL JEBUS!"
...etc...

I used to have th same problem as you. I used to say "Oh my god!" all the time but I eventually taught myself to say "Oh your god!" instead.

NED is pretty cool to though.

I say, go for it!
