That is the beauty of it, God always was. He revealed this when Moses asked God to tell him how Israel would know it was God that sent him as a messenger. God told Moses to tell Israel that "I AM sent you." In other words, the DEFINING characteristic of God is existence, think about that for a second. Only he can be the "I AM" because that is WHAT HE IS. As for us, we had a beginning, therefore our defining characteristic is not existence, but dependence. Time only began when the universe was created, therefore, there was not 'before' to speak of. Only created things need a creator!

There can never be an end to this line of reasoning. Even if there is a cause for God or the big bang or whatever, what is the cause of that? There can be no rational answer to what existed first. You can always ask what was before.

According to Buddhism God could not be created. Time has always been and always will be.
