I have been going to karate lessons for the past 12 months. It's good exercise cause you sweat a lot , I have more muscle mass now and I've lost some inches around my waist.I go karate 3 times a week from 6:30-7:30 pm.Karate is fun , it tones your body,it's something you do to spend your free time,it's for all ages and you don't have to feel bad if you're overweight cause you won't be the only one.Karate makes me feel more confident cause I learn how to defend myself and it's a great hobby.Hope I helped you , my friend.

Karate isn't a good exercise, to loose weight you need lots of aerobic activity... Jogging is a good one, or using an elipical cross trainer burns the most calories.
Things like Karate and Yoga are good for toning and balance, not for weight loss.

Great exercise! My sister-in-law was morbidly obese and she has now lost 75 pounds by watching what she eats and doing Karate. My husband lost about 25 pounds while doing Mixed Martial Arts.

Any physical sport requiring you to move will help. Karate's isn't the most effective way to lose fat though. You need to incorporate other exercises with your interest. Like cardio or elliptical trainer

Yes! Martial arts is a great way to lose weight and be able to defend yourself should the need arise. I took a few classes and enjoyed it. At first it'll be hard work, but you'll adjust and it'll get easier with time.

It would depend on how overweight? If you are 30 lbs.+ or have other health issues, it's always best to talk to your doctor first.
The other great benefit of any martial arts class is that they also teach you to respect your body as a whole. Mind, body, spirit.
Good luck.

It's a form of exercise, but you have to practice everyday. After awhile and a few belts up they might teach you some katas, those are some good routines to exercise with and practice at the sametime.

If I had the money, I would. Karate is wonderful exercise. So is swimming, walking, skating, jogging, fishing, rowing...the best thing to do is find something you enjoy.

I am overweight and I do take classes, and I know people who take classes and it does not hinder me (with the exception of some of the exercises) and I am in better shape.

Yes I would. I still coach up and coming martial artists, and have retired from competition now to be rather plump. :) It is an excellent way to lose weight and to get in shape.
