Why do atheists always say that Christianity is illogical? Have they looked up information?

Calling athiests here: I cannot find any contradictions, or pieces of illogical text in the bible that cannot be resolved with a bit of thought or resources. I would love to answer anyone's questions on this topic, but few ever ask, and most of those who do have already made up their minds. Is it just being sure that you already know, refusal to be responsible to a higher power, stubborness, lack of resources or something else intirely?

They only have book knowledge and maybe some little degrees but never venture out for a personal relationship with Christ. You can see that with their answers. They bash the bible more than anything. They are like Thomas in the bible they have see to believe. God is a spirit. He is everywhere!

Actually, yes, Ive read the Bible (several times) and have looked it all up - and it doesnt make sense. You want an easy contradiction - look at Exodus and Deuterotomy. In Exidus, Moses climbs the mount and receives the ten commendments PRIOR to being exiled tin the desert for forty years. In Deut, he climbs the mount as they (he and his people) are getting ready to enter the holy land - after wandering the desert for 40 years. IS THAT NOT A BIT CONTRADICTORY???

Resolving a contradiction via using the resource of thought leads to made up answers. There is nothing to explain this contradiction...it is off by 40 years. Now, either GOd made a rather large mistake in writing his Book, or it is false. There are a hundred other similar contradictions....its just that the Church has had 1500 years to invent and think up answers to each of these contradictions...
Its not refusal of a higher power - it doesnt exist. We are the only creatures that believe this myth, because we have the ability to ponder life. ANd so we created Gods to explain things that we have yet to explain. It is not stubborness - stubborness is someone who refuses to change their stone age thinking simply because it is something their parents taught them, and regardless of the amount of proof there is that their thinking is wrong. Not lack of resources - I have the same resources that you do - a brain. I choose to USE mine, rather than allow it to be filled with lies and other peoples ideaologies.

A challenge you to one simple task - seeing as God is almighty, all loving and SAYS in the Bible that prayer can even move mountains, I want you tonight to pray that everyone is the world that has cancer is cured tonight. Then, explain to me why it doesnt happen....why it NEVER happens. When a prayer is answered, it is called a coincidence. 20 people have AIDS, all 20 pray, 19 die and one lives - and its a f*cking miracle?? No, its called the laws or probability.

You seem truly interested.

Most Atheists have, indeed, searched and searched for information regarding their position. Maybe the reason you cannot find any contradictions in the Bible is because you already have it set in your mind that it's all true. There are two things, which have been stated in previous answers, that made me question the whole thing in the first place. They are:

1) It's hard to believe in an old book that's been rewritten over and over again and has been translated into so many different languages. Through all that rewriting and translating, I believe something was bound to be lost.
2) It's hard to believe that some dude just put us all here on Earth. And for what purpose? Is it because he is a power-hungry freak who wanted dominance and wanted all of his "subjects" to bestow all trust in him? Is it just because he wanted to control all of his devotees' minds? Doesn't sound very logical to me.

The reason few Atheists ever ask Christians about their beliefs is because most already know enough about Christianity to make up their mind. They don't need to ask.

The reason Atheists are Atheists are reasons that Christians will never understand. Let's just leave it at that. It's time for people to just let other people believe as they wish.

I'm not sure if it's not as much not looking up information, but allowing personal opinions to get in the way of the facts. Atheists amaze me simply by the fact that they seem to have a greater faith than anyone. They without a doubt believe that they materialized out of nothing and do not believe that there is any way whatsoever that a supreme being created them or the world that surrounds them. The big bang theory seems to support their theories, but where did that atom that started it all come from anyways? Those are just some thoughts. I really have no answer to why those things are the way that they are, but I do know that it is all apart of God's awesome plan and that is what I'm all for living out.

One example is that god created the universe in 6 days, but then had to resort to flooding the Earth to kill everything. That's not logical. How about when god supposedly got angry at the Egyptians. What'd he do? Well, he did nothing to the Egyptians. Instead he killed their innocent cute first-born babies. Where's the logic in that? Also, if he is so powerful, why create a son and make him a martyr on the cross. All he has to do is show his face once in a while to get the same result without death involved. Oooh Oh Oh, here's another one. How about the logistics of making a boat out of wood that can carry 2 of every animal? First of all, you can't build a boat that big out of wood. The wood is no where near strong enough for such a vessel. Not even close! Also, lets look at some wave logic. The size of an ocean wave is determined by a few things. Wind, gravity (moon & Earth), Reach (Distance a wave can go before hitting an object like land), and the ocean floor. With no land to inhibit the reach of the waves, the ocean would be a torment of huge waves. No ark could survive that! Totally illogical. Oh yeah, this one's good. He created Adam and Eve but kept knowledge from them? WTF??? What's the first thing every family does when they get a dog? They try to teach it things. Potty train, shaking hands, fetching… If god was real, then why treat us worse than we treat our own pets. Totally illogical!

A good starting point is that theologians base their world view upon an old book that claims there is a superior being who poofed us all into existence.

If I told you that the Harry Potter series was actually a true account of the life of a young sorcerer, would you find it logical?

And I don't think there is any stubbornness, lack of resources, or refusal to be responsible to a higher power any more so than you would be exhibiting those traits were I to continually insist that the Universe was created by being farted by the Great Green Duck after eating from the infinite bag of beans. Would your refusal to believe this absent fairly conclusive proof be stubbornness? Why would you have to defend a refusal to believe in the Duck?

Yes, because everything in the Bible can be explained with faith and faerie tale magic (what you guys call 'miracles').

Christianity is illogical because believers don't believe for any particular reason. They come up with the excuse of 'faith', they ignore the fact there is no evidence to the existence of God and they put their hands over their ears and shout "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" when presented with evidence against the existence of God.

They read a book and say, "About that God guy, he's really cool. I'm gonna mindlessly worship him." Well how about I read a book and say, "About that Gimli guy, he's really cool. I'm gonna mindlessly worship him now." I know a lot of you will find my analogy flawed, but it's how I see Christianity.

Not to mention the surrealism of it. Since I'm running long, I'll only give one example:
At some point in the Bible, Jesus feeds FOUR THOUSAND men with 7 loaves of bread and a few skimpy fish. Not only is the equal distribution of these highly unlikely, each man would get barely enough for a small snack. Great miracle there, Jesus.

I believe, and I'm really sorry if this is upsetting, but you asked, that I cannot believe anyone that tells me that the bible is true (or false) because those people have no way of knowing the truth and/or could be lying for personal gain. Multiply that by all of the generations going back to it's day of writing.
It makes me think it is illogical to believe in the bible, because not only is there no reason to believe those people, but there are reasons to not believe them. The best being that many of them have had alterior (sp?) motives.
So my choice is to believe that christians are either illogical or terribly, terribly naive. Since there are many mature christians, and I thought of this when I was 16, it seems more likely that they are illogical.

Well, if the Bible is so logical, how come Christians keep arguing among themselves, in particular about what should and should not be in the Bible? Marcion (c.150) thought that Christians must reject the Old Testament, since the God who sent the Christ is not the God of the Old Testament; he also thought that there is only one true gospel, that of Luke. Irinaeus (c.180) believed that there are four and only four gospels (out of 30 or so floating around at the time), and his viewpoint eventually (by about 300) prevailed. But even then, many Christian scholars questioned the Revelation; the last attempt to remove the Revelation from the canon was undertaken by none other than Martin Luther.

On a more practical plane, try this... In Mat 6:5-6, Jesus says:

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Essentially, Jesus condemns church going and public displays of religiosity. Yet Christians are very fond of both...

The Bible is full of contradictions and illogical material. Believers claim the parts that fail in a literal sense to be symbolic as a means of defending their need to believe.

Why don't I ask you questions about the Bible? Because I already know the answers you'll give me ... and I find them highly suspect / formed of opinion that has no basis in the physical world we can observe.

Atheists start from a position of using reason and verifiable experiment to understand the world unlike those who believe in the bible who try to make the world conform to it 'with a bit of thought or resources'. You've got it backwards. Start with what you can verify is there and see where it leads - if you do that, you will soon see how irrelevant the bible is, other than for sociological and psychological interest.
