It better be, because it's EXPENSIVE. Most bakeries can make a wedding cake to a smaller scale for you, I'm sure.
Some friends of mine did that very thing. They ordered a birthday cake from the baker that did their wedding cake.

It's so good because quality products are used to make a wedding cake. It's not the same as the boxed stuff you can make at home. A "real" cake (made from scratch) takes a lot of skill. When you buy a box of mix there are many chemicals that make it almost impossible for a home baker to ruin it.
As for purchasing a smaller cake - no problem! Any bakery that makes larger wedding cakes will also supply smaller cakes for other occasions - think about the smallest tier on the top of a wedding cake.

I feel like I'm about to break a baker's code here, but there is nothing special about the cake itself other than the fact that it is made from scratch.
Yellow Butter Cake.
9 oz Butter
12 oz Sugar
0.12 oz Salt
6.75 oz eggs
15 oz Cake Flour
0.62 oz baking powder
10 oz Milk
0.25 oz Vanilla
A creaming method is used to mix this, if you wanted it in chocolate, you would add 4oz of unsweetened melted chocolate in the first step.
The creaming method is as follows.
mix butter sugar and salt with a paddle until it is smooth and even. Add the eggs one at a time until they are incorperated.
add the milk and vanilla extract, and slowly add the flour until you get a smooth mix.
This makes about 2-3 10inch cake rounds.
That's what is used for the cake 9 times out of 10.
The icing is usually rolled fondant sealed on with buttercream Icing. You really aren't supposed to eat the fondant or royal icing that is used to decorate, though it is entirely possible.
As far as anything fancy, the reason they are so expensive is the extensive labor that goes into making the fondant and decorating it. Often, a bakery will premake the cake and keep it in the freezer until there is an order. This type of cake is very durable and keeps up amazingly well.
I'm not going to give away all of the secrets as far as icing recipes, but that is the standard cake used for weddings.

Wedding cakes generally don't taste good. they're good for smashing the bride/groom in the face. By the time the guests have their piece of the wedding cake, most are so drunk that a piece of cardboard taste good.

Becasue it cost a fortune and was cooked by a pro with professional equipment and it was picked by the bride from 500 other flavors. You are probably used to boxes, which are good, but lack any real zing.

it's tasty cause it comes out from the true meaning of wedding; love and passion. The unity of the married ones reflect in the taste of the delightful cake. It cannot be bought from market cause love cannot be bought..... it is born from the inside.
