We're wondering if the peanut butter that we put the pill in is enough or if we have to make him eat a meal. We don't want to make him ill!

He needs to most likely eat some of his dog food. If you use dry, spoil him with a bit of can to speed up his eating. A meal is a bit more than Peanut Butter!

If it says taken with a meal, I'd do just that. Pull up his food at night so he can't eat. Give the pills in the peanut butter then put his food down so he can eat. If in doubt call his vet for adivice.

He needs more than just a bit of peanut butter. Give the pill after he eats his dinner or give him at least a few biscuits with it. They usually say that for meds that are likely to make the dog vomit on an empty stomach.

It depends and I would call your veterinarian to confirm but usually you don't have to feed a whole meal. Give the dog a snack as well as the peanut butter such as a puree of vegetables or some other light food to coat his stomach. Just remember if you give him a heaver snack to cut back a little at dinner to prevent him gaining weight.

I would give him the pill in the peanut butter and also give him a milk bone, maybe even two. That should be enough to settle his stomach. Also, you could try and feed him at the same time you are going to give the pills....that might be easier on you to remember to medicate him. Good Luck!!

If it says for him to take with food, then it would depend on his size how much food...At least 1/4 of a normal meal...

There are a few reasons that certain meds need food.

One, is to make the med digest slowly, so the most benefit is derived from it, or to mix it with digestive enzymes.

Another, is to keep the med from digesting too quickly and overdosing him .

Another is to keep the med from irritating his intestinal tract.

Hope this helps.

mlm1975 is right mash the pill or liquid med in with a can or even a 1/2 can dog food.

Usually if it specifies "to be taken with food" it means a meal. It may upset the stomach otherwise or maybe the food helps it to digest.

When my dog had to take pills, we just gave her a couple of tablespoons of wet food, crumbled the pill, and she was fine.
