White wine glasses hold from the stem to keep from warming it up.
Reds you can hold by the stem or by the body to help "open up" the wine.
Either way take your time and enjoy the flavors and aromas.
Cheers!

You should always hold the glass by the stem.. The heat from the hand warms up the wine. If you are using a glass that does not have a stem pick the glass up from the very top of the rim.

There's certainly more than one way to do this. No way is the "right" way, but more a personal preference really. For example, sometimes while sipping my wine, I will allow the stem of the glass to be seated between my ring and middle finger, cupping the bottom of the glass, while other times I will place my thumb on one side of the stem, and my forefinger and middle finger on the other side of the stem, while raising it. Again, it's personal choice... just enjoy!

I hold the bottle by the neck to minimize my body temp from altering the wine, which I like ice cold, like beer I don;t bother with wine glasses, because I break them and I have to drink like a priss, which isn;t my thing. (Real sophisticated, huh)

By the stem or bottom so your hands don't warm the wine.
