i've got a good answer. did it come with the original sleeve? (the sleeve one installs in the dash before wiring the head unit and sliding it in) if not..that's one good way. does it have hideous scratches on the sides..and the plastic face edges are toothy...AND no sleeve? the wires..are they cut nicely..or is the insulation on them pulled over the copper conductor, and the insulation edges white-ish? (Like they've been yanked out in a hurry) if the answer is "yes" to most of these...it's a good possibility it was removed from it's original location in a hurry.

well if the wires are all taped up and they look like someone just ripped them out theres a sign also if the sides of the radio where it would normaly be in the dash have dents in them like someone just pry'd it out with a screwdriver or something. Why did you buy a sony anyway they're garbage. You should put it on ebay and go get a pioneer and DONT GO TO THE COPS if you ask and he needs a radio it might just be "stolen" and if you ask and it really is stolen your gonna get charged with receiving stolen goods if you dont snitch on him. We dont like snitches

I work for my local Sheriff's Office and if you call and ask them to run it. They can check the serial number to see if it has been reported stolen. If you are worried it is stolen and afraid you will be in trouble, just tell them you have not bought it yet but are thinking about it, and you just wanted to make sure it was not stolen.

does it have a receipt? the box it was bought with?... plus if it is stolen the person who it rightly belongs to may have used a special pen (secruity pen) that is invisible to the naked eye and writen details on the stereo, which only shows up in UV light... check it out.. or go to the police ask them if a stereo had been reported stolen

I seriously doubt that you will get more than 20.00 at a pawn shop...why bother? Just keep the unit and use it, or re-sell it and keep the money. No one is asking if a used head unit is stolen. And if it is truely a Head Unit, it needs amps anyway. Good luck

you can call the local police department and ask them if there have been any of that model reported stolen lately.

If you have to ask, then it's stolen, as if you really care.
