You cannot beat the Glock line of handguns. I personally own a Glock Model 22, in .40 S&W caliber. This is the most widely used handgun in American law enforcement today. The gun is practically idiot proof. There is no way for the gun to accidently discharge. The trigger must be pulled completely to the rear to fire the gun. I would high recommend the Glock. If you don't like the .40 S&W caliber, you got 9mm, .357 Sig., 10mm, .45 ACP, .and 45 GAP(Glock automatic pistol).

The semi-auto Beretta 9mm is the most reliable against jamming.
Consumer reports tested many handguns and the Beretta had four misfires in ten-thousand rounds after they buried the weapon in sand.
If you are looking for stopping power try the Smith and Wesson .44 special revolver. It uses a very heavy slow bullet that has plenty of stopping power.
You can also load either weapon with Glasier rounds which are compressed pellets of lead. These rounds produce very shallow wounds and will not penetrate two sheets of drywall due to the fact that the round shatters on impact. This would make it safer in a indoor situation with possible innocent people on the other side of the wall behind the subject that you might have to shoot.

S&W M&P .40 is a good one. comes with three different grip sizes, ambidextrous safety and slide release (can be on either side). It is a polymer with a steel slide. Most police depts are switching to this, the military seems to be also. They will have a .45 out sometime.
Personally i would recommend a 1911 style pistol. There are numerous customization parts out there, and a layman can completely disassemble on of these pistols. Plus they are extremely reliable if you are willing to spend a little extra. If you are into 1911's the three names to remember are springfield kimber and colt. Colt doesnt make them anymore though. The LA swat teams carry the kimber TLE (tactical law enforcement) the springfield TRP is carried by the FBI HRT (hostage rescue team). If you want/need a light utility rail, springfield is the only one that builds a 1911 with one molded on.
And if you get nervous on the price, remember this question "How much is your life worth?"

H&K and Sig Sauer both make excellent handguns used by law enforcement and military special forces.
Police traditionally carried 9mm but most have changed to .40SW for its greater knockdown power.
Look to spend about $700-$900 for a HK or Sig.

I would go with the Glock 23, .40 and its light weight. Any glock for that matter is pretty good. My uncle was a cop for 30 years and now he's a US Marshall, and he's carried berreta's, S&W's, but the gun he loves most of all is his glock. The way he talks about it, he'd go through hell and back with it. Don't take the one the department will give you, which im guessing is a Berreta (good gun, but not really any stopping power), get something thats got the hitting power and is light weight to.

I would go to a local firing range and investigate it through them, If they allow a rental and a safety course, I'd recomend signing up and then later on if you are in the law enforcement industry, you will be issued one. You may even consider a military term. Safety first!

I would wait until you are in law enforcement. They will not only give you the gun, they will teach you the proper way to handle it too. This will give you the education you need to make the best educated purchase when you buy your own personal weapon.

Here's one you may not have seen before:

They make a ported .45 that I am told shoots like a .22. Almost no kick.
In general though, police departments in North America seem to be adopting the Glock.
