my daughter who is 8 years old could not sleep last night so around 2 a.m. when she woke up again for the 2nd time, I told her to go watch cartoons(to make her tired) and sure enough, she got tired and was in bed for the night at 3 a.m. my boyfriend said i should of just made her stay in her bed and eventually she would of fell asleep. Who is right? She does not do this everynight...i cant even remeber the last time she could not sleep.

I disagree with the boyfreind interferring with your right to discipline your daughter. However I think he is right in what he said.

You have set a precedent that may not neccessarily be good for your daughter. Ever time now she gets up in the middle of the night she is going to say "Mommy allowed it the last time so It must be ok." And she will go and watch cartoons or some other show in the middle of the night.

I may not have allowed her to watch TV what I might have done, as long as I was awake to, would be to make her read to me. It accomplishes two things. Gets her to read more and it does make a person sleepy. However you do this in her bedroom quiet and away from everything.

I have an 8 year old as well. She has done that from time to time as well, sometimes a bad dream or something etc. And the T.V. gets their mind off of it and soon they are back asleep. As long as it's not a habit every once in a while is fine.

I think hatyoudid is fine and not a big deal. Your bf is just being critical and shoudl not say anything since she is your daughter - plus it worked right?

She is your daughter and you are right. My brother and i grew up with T.Vt's in our bedrooms. If we couldn't sleep we would just flip it on and after a few minutes we would pass out.

That seemed to work! good for you.. my mam used to shout at us if we could not sleep.. I like your method a lot better. Your child will not be anxious about going to sleep.

IMO there is no right or wrong. I personally would have made her stayed in bed.

i do it on occasion...if my daughter can't sleep i'll let her come in with me and watch one 30 minute show to get tired. they are just like us...sometimes you just aren't sleepy.

remember who's child it is. while opinions are nice, you make the final call in how to take care of your child.
