I think it is very important for doctors to do more for migraine suffers. When a migraine hits you , you have to have someone drive you to the doctor, then wait and wait to be seen. This is just prolonging the migraine and making it worse, because you are out in the light, noise and trying not to vomit in the middle of the floor in front of everyone. Please I beg you there has to be help out there for us!!!!

I take keppra 3000 mg a day now. I have been on Topomax and probably ever migraine medication out there. The topomax helped but they took me off of it because I kept having kidney stones from it. I take Maxalt, it helps if you caught it early. I have not had Diladid brfore so I will ask my neurologist about that. My problem is alot of the time I will start vomiting and can not keep the medication down. Thanks for the feed back.

I highly doubt that a medical doctor would risk his DEA license to give you a shot of demerol for home use. (Ask this could easily get you labeled as Turkey - aka drug seeker.) It is a Schedule II Narcotic.
Has your tried a oral tablet such as Darvocet or Lortab with maybe Meclizine? In the ER, they typically give someone Compazine IV (antinausea) with Dilaudid IV.
You should be looking into preventative medications such as low dose antidepressants, Topamax, beta blockers, etc. And for when migrianes come on something as a Amerge, Imitrex or any of the other Triptans that are currently on the market barring you do not have any contraindications to take those medications.
I get them all the time but haven't needed to got the ER for a long time as I reduce my triggers, take preventative meds and nip a headache in the bud with Ultracet as soon as it starts as I can't have the triptans due to TIAs and a clotting disorder.

Man, you are playing with fire here! First of all, if you ever did find a Dr to prescribe Demerol injections, you would need a home care nurse to actually administer the drug.
I am allergic to morphine and dilaudid, so if I'm in dire straights, Demerol is my only savior in the ER, however, the body builds up a tolerance to Demerol VERY quickly.... you could be fine with a 50cc IM injection now, but pretty soon you will need the drug in IV form for it to work. Then you have the problem of the drug building up in your liver. Take too much, and welcome to seizure city!
I know I sound preachy, but, been there, done that.
I know the ER sucks, and I know how it feels to have the Dr's think that you are just trying to get drugs. I also know that although it seems like these types of drugs are helping, they are not.
I was on a Duragesic 100 pain patch for three years (a narcotic 80x's more powerful than morphine) to try to control my migraines. I'd also been on every triptan out there. I went to a new neurologist, and he told me to get off of everything but the preventatives (including over the counter meds). It was a living hell, but I have now been migraine free for over a month.

I've never heard of a doctor prescribing what you ask for home use....and it's too risky for a doctor to put his license on the line to do that...they will prescribe demerol type meds in pill form...but most ER's give migraine sufferes dilaudid and phenegryn IV to help subside the migrain pain...and demerol occassionally....have you tried going to your doc and try some of the other meds such as imitrex? There are a few others out there that are new specifically for migraines...

SarahLoretta - Migraines can certainly be very disabling, and I'm sorry to hear that yours are giving you so much trouble. I wonder if you can tell us what kind of injections you are getting. I don't know much about home remedies, but the treatment of migraines has progressed significantly in the last few years. Older treatments include ergotamine shots which you have probably gotten. More recent medications such as Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax, etc. are effective for many, but less effective for others. Botox injections are a promising treatment for patients who have failed multiple therapies such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, Topamax, and the above-mentioned drugs. It sounds like that might be what you are getting now. Another treatment which has shown promise in a very small study involves using red-tinted contact lenses. The theory is that they filter out specific wavelengths of light that can overstimulate receptors on the retina in some migraine patients and contributes to the photophobia that is typical of migraines. This study was done by Dr. Richard Garrison and Dr. Kathleen Saathoff at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, TX. A third treatment that many got excited about was closing PFOs (a small hole in the heart that as many as 25-30% of the population will have) in patients with migraine headaches. However, a recent study called the MIST trial did not show any clear resolution of migraines in patients who underwent closure. Hope that helps - good luck to you!
