Sorry, I don't share this popular hatred. I actually enjoy a good mime. However I get bored with mime for its own sake. It's good when a comic or actor has mime training, it can only improve your sense of stage movement.
I mean, Chaplin was unquestionably one of the great physical comedians, and his mime was excellent and he put it right up front in his work. Have you ever seen Jean Louis Berrault?
Ever see Children of Paradise? I challenge any mime hater to see this man, or that movie and come away with the same attitude.
The problem with mime hatred is that it's based on being exposed to bad mimes, and they are truly a horror... but if all you ever heard was bad music, would that mean it made sense to hate ALL music?
You just need to look a little to find what's good in any artform.

Well, was the audition for a mime?? If it was not, then do not worry about it. If you don't want to hire a mime, just be honest and tell him the truth that his talent is not what you are looking for and just thank him for his time. That is all you need to do. It has nothing to do with liking or disliking a mime-it has to do with what the audition's purpose is. Personally, I have only seen them on TV and they look very ridiculous. So, I would not want to have a project that included one of those silly things either, maybe, unless it was for children.

A training in basic mime is I think part of most performing arts courses so he was probably trying to pick an easy module or something.
And don't be so quick to dismiss them, where would Adam Sandler, Jim Kerrie, Lee Evans, Eddie Izzard, (and many other comedians) be with out their Mime training.

No, of course not. Gary Larson knows what to do with them; he drew a cartoon of how when they don't repay their loans, the mob puts them into real glass boxes in the street and everyone ignores them as they try to get out, thinking they are just miming. Natural justice in action.

I can't say I hate them, but they creep me out big time! Why can't they talk, and they have these stupid expressions on their faces, and they just look at you, like YOU'RE the strange one!
