Alex, your question is very good! I hadn't though about it before but now I realize one thing. I believe that the apple in the garden of Eden was not actually the cause of our doom, but rather an excuse for us to live the way we do. I believe that humans need the challenge of the world we live in. granted, it could be better but had we not "sinned" in Eden, then everyone one of us would be happy, never aging and sinless. Yet, if we still lived in Eden, then what would happiness mean to us if we could not compare it to sadness, happiness would not be complemented and we would take it for granted.

As I understand it, Adam and Eve were created perfect. They misused their free will, which introduced imperfection to the race. Christians believe that even being "good" is not what God wants. He cannot accept less than perfection, and of all the people who ever lived, or will live, only Jesus, His son, ever lived a perfect life, offering himself as a sacrifice. The choice we have is to accept His sacrifice, or try to be (at least) as good as Him.

We were like angels in the garden. We had no sinful experience. If we had no sinful experience, we did not know evil neither. So God did not want us to have sinful experience, because He said, who sin against me shall surely die. because he has a salvation plan for us before he set this world in motion, He asks us to do good, because he who believe in him will save by grace. So people who believe in him or Christ, he commands them to do good.

A better question is why did He put it there in the first place...
God has always given us a choice, to do good or bad. To accept salvation or not. He's always given us a free will... even at the beginning of our existance as mankind.

The bible confusingly refers to the tree of the knowlege of good and evil. What is meant is that you say that you know the difference between good and evil and you don't need God, which is rebellion. So really, it is the tree of rebellion.

And He doesn't want us to rebel against Him now, either.

cannot not have good without evil otherwise there is no comparison to judge one. can't have hot without cold, light without dark etc. having both available to us he granted us free will to choose the correct path, hopefully, and be what he would've liked us to be.
