Go to an obedience class and read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
What All Good Dogs Should Know – Volhard http://www.volhard.com/
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins

Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

I agree with Joan and her technique. It works well for my dog!
There are additional tips I would like to share here

1) Train him not after but before his meal.
2) Train his in places where there are no distractions from noise, cars, tv, kids etc
3) Dont train when his energy high. Take him for a walk/exercise then after he settle down..then begin with the train
4) After Gizmo master the 3 commands, you must reinforcing and continuing the train until he automatically sit, stay, lay on his own without showing/expecting the treat/rewards!
5) Dont over do it. 2 times a day, 3-6 times per sessions.
6) Rewards his good behaviour with treats vs ignore bad behaviour/stubborn!

To teach a dog to sit he must be standing when u tell him to sit . Only use the one word sit. don't carry on a conversation that will confuse him. Press on hos hindquarters gently as you say sit when he finally does it reward him do it every day for a week he will get the message. If you are using a biscuit make sure you hold it up high enough that he will sit to see it.

Either option A: You can hire a trainer!

Or Option B: You say SIT! and push down the backend of the dog into a sitting position, then give him a treat. And keep doing it. It's sort of a slow process, but it worked well with my dogs!

for sit, hold the treat at nose level and pull up a little bit. when you get them to sit say sit and give them a treat for lay do the same thing but bring the treat down for stay, get the to sit or lay hold your hand out and repeatedly say STAY STAY STAY move back a couple of feet. if they stay, give them the treat. progressively get further and further away:)

Things take time. Sometimes you have to "show" him what to do. If you want him to sit, say SIT and then use your hand to lower his rear end and then repeat SIT. Give him a treat. Then ask him to sit again. He should do it right away, if not, then help him. The same goes with any other pet. Pets don't always understand English; you've got to show him what you want him to do!

Go to the local library and check out a book on basic obedience training. You need to learn how to get across to Gizmo that YOU are the master in your relationship....and that he is NOT. Maybe you can even find an Obedience club in your area that holds classes and sign up for some.

1. get a clicker and lots of treats.

2. biuld clicker responce.= click it and give treat (do this a few times so it knows that click means good)

3. SIT. either wait untill it sits by its self or put it in sit position, or hold treat infrount of its nose and slowly move it over dogs head(it should sit) when it starts to sit say SIT when it does click and reward. (repeat many times)

4.DOWN. either wait untill it lays down by itself or place it in down position or get it to sit then hold treat near its nose and slowly move it down to the floor then away from dog(it should lay down.) when it starts to go down sat DOWN when it does click and reward(repeat many times)

5.STAY. get dog to sit or down. say STAY then wate a few seconds click and reward (repeat) then next time take a step back then click and treat(repeat) each time try moveing thurther away.
