Woman soldier faced repeated sexual abuse in Iraq
“Mom, I just can’t go back”

By Evan Kornfeld | July 14, 2006 | Page 2

POLICE IN Eugene, Ore., arrested Suzanne Nichole Swift June 11 and charged her with desertion for the “crime” of refusing to return to Iraq.

Swift, a 21-year-old specialist serving with the 54th Military Police Company, explained her decision by citing not only her opposition to the illegal and immoral war in Iraq, but also repeated sexual harassment and abuse suffered at the hands of her commanders and other soldiers.

In January, Swift was ordered to return to Iraq with her unit, but she did not report for duty.

When she joined the Army in spring 2003, recruiters told Swift that if she signed up as a military police specialist for a five- instead of a four-year stint, she would not be sent to Iraq. When she arrived at basic training, she was told immediately that she would be sent to Iraq. read the full article -

I am sorry about all these losers answering your question. This is a serious matter. I bet this does go on quite a bit. I think some women just put up with it to be in the military. I feel so bad, they just want to serve their country like everyone else in the military. I am a woman (22). I have always wanted to join the military. I have thought about this for a long time, but I decided that I didn't want to be put in a postion to deal with any type of sexual abuse or any pr**** men wouldn't think that I belong there. I hope she is doing well. I thank her for doing her best to serve our country. Feel free to email me, also give me the correct link.

Shouldn't this be under military?? And your link is bad

Why didn't she go to the IG?? (the IG would take care of it all...if you know what one is you would know that he has no connections to her Sgt.s and therefore an impartial investigator) As for him showing up at her tent(her Sgt.) ..hmmm that doesn't sound right when a soldier is out in the field like that they have 5-7 people in their tent (all the same sex) And there is nothing to do, so rarely is someone alone in their tents and also there is NO alcohol over there..........NONE how could the Sgt. be drunk??? Now she might've been harassed, but I really don't think she was raped ...if she was lied to by the recruiter then that recruiter should be dealt with, but you NEVER sign your name on the dotted line without reading everything!!! (especially when dealing with the Government!!!)
I mean honestly wtf does a recruiter know about where you go after basic ?? I will tell you NOTHING they have NO control over where people go, I thought this was common knowledge??
Anyways her story has alot of holes and I do mean A LOT, harassment ...maybe ..........rape out in the field...I'm NOT buying that one...ss.
There are ways of going over your supervisors head in the military and without them even knowing about it...why didn't she go that route??? I don't mean to sound harsh, but there are just way too many holes in the story ...it doesn't add up.
As for "shesh" why the name calling? Each and everyone on here has their own opinions, and you want to call people a "LOSER" for that?? Grow up

I think this woman is just a disgruntled soldier trying to save her a$$. Her claims of sexual abuse would probably be taken more seriously if she wasn't spewing all this "illegal war" rhetoric. The way it stands, it sounds as if the sexual harrassment thing is just another convenient excuse for her to remain stateside. I say kick her out with a dishonorable discharge. I mean puh-leez; i can understand a consciencous objector who was drafted but this woman VOLUNTEERED to join the army.

Anyone who knows the military or especially knows those who have been in the military know that there are many protections for soldiers from harassment. They have many avenues within the military to report such activities.

However, I guess she knows her audience - there are enough Americans, especially on the liberal side and in the media, who are so completely ignorant of all things military that they will lap this stuff up without question.

PANCHA

"I kinda agree with baq2cali,she should have stood up to her harassers.Thats what I would have done."

Puh-leeze shut the hell up! You would have said what everybody else in the military says: Yes, sir!

In the military, you are literally government property. They can punish you severely for insubordination. You are no longer a civillian when you sign that paper. If you would really be so stupid to do this, your she-hulk *** would be sitting in the brig!

History--in every war-their have been horrible actions on both sides by bad people. Are you telling me Iraq has done nothing? They would be the first since the beginning of time
War always has bad on both sides--and many horrible stories. Get off your soapbox.
