You can't guarentee everything but here's an idea -
Pups are healthy at the time of transfer of ownership and if something does turn out to be wrong with them within the first three months that is a result of the breeding or was present but undetected before they were given will be either refunded or vet bills covered to treat that problem.

As for temperment, I'd put a six month limit on that. If they new owners aren't satisfied with the puppies developing temperment within the first six months they can return the dog for a full or partial refund. No refunds if they want to keep the dog.

I don't see how you can offer a refund on injuries since those can be caused by owner neglect or just a freak accident. If you really want to offer something I'd put it down for something like six weeks or thirty days and say that injured dogs can be returned for a refund if the accident was not the fault of the owners.

What I did when it was time to come up with one for my own program, was go to other breeder's websites. They often post their contracts and guarantees right on their sites. I read a pile of them, decided what I wanted to use or change, and then wrote my own.

Most breeders will guarantee the health of the puppy, in regard to existing illness or genetic defects, for a certain period of that puppy's life. Mine is for two years. Most problems will arise before then, and even after that, I make sure to tell my puppy people to let me know immediately if something comes up, and I will do everything I can to help. I've never had one of those calls, and no one has needed to use the guarantee, but it's still good business, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

In return, I require that the puppies are spayed and neutered as soon as they are medically able, and that a copy of the certificate be sent to me. I have the right to reclaim the puppy if this is not met. I've never had to do that, either, but it is assurance that my puppies' health is attended to, they are not endangered by frivilous pregnancies, and people do not use my dogs to spoil the breed that I'm working so hard to improve.

I also require that the medical and emotional needs of the puppy are met throughout its entire life, without fail... or I can reclaim said puppy. If the dog is ever to be removed from the home, I get first option to buy the dog back. It's up to me to make sure this happens, though. I keep in constant touch with every family that ever takes one of my puppies home. I send Christmas presents and birthday presents, and birth announcements for new litters so the old puppies can see their new little siblings. Yeah, I'm nuts... But it keeps the people coming back and telling me about the puppies (which I love), so that I know they are always happy and being taken care of.

In other words, I only guarantee my puppies' health if the puppies needs are all taken care of... I cannot guarantee the health and temperament of a puppy that is taken home and mistreated, neglected, and exposed to terrible things. It's a two-way street.

Check out some breeder's sites and read several examples of guarantees... (Some can get fairly complicated...) Then, write your own according to what you want to include.

Edit: Temperament guarantees should not be so long... A puppy can turn sour because of treatment and/or environment, and that is not your fault. Put a shorter limit on that, and make sure you ask a *lot* of specific questions if someone tries to come after you about the puppy's behavior.

Best of luck!

well you can't really.

Anyone interested, tell them they can meet the parants and get them their shots and show the new people the mother's and the puppies shot records. This is usually enough.

But don't worry about it. Most people really dont know what they are looking for when buying a dog so they get something sick. At least you know you are having ok puppies.

Some behavior problems are inherited (this is why you shouldnt breed if you dont know what you are doing) so the puppies may or may not have such problems.

I wouldnt have a refund if the dog just gets hurt. If a dog gets hit by a car its not your fault. Also if they have parvo thats the owner's fault for not keeping up on their shots.

If its an inherited problem though...tell them to bring a vet's note and then you will refund them.

My guarantee on my puppies is within 72 hours they have to take the puppy to their vet. If for any reason, they want to bring it back, it has to come back in the same condition it left me in within that 72 hours. After that, they are guaranteed for life for any of the genetic defects I test for - OFA, VwD, thyroid, eyes. I also have the right to reclaim any puppy without a refund that is not being treated appropriately. Further, if the dog is to go to anyone outside of the immediate family, I have to be informed and have to give my approval or can take the dog back. This way it does not go into a bad situation. This is a pretty standard pet puppy breeder contract. The part about the genetic problems, I offer another puppy as replacement. You could substitue anything in there - such as temperment - and offer all refund if returned or partial refund if another compromise is arrived at. Good luck.

I think that a guarantee on health should include the following:
1) 2 weeks for parvo virus, kennel cough
2) 1 year on genetic diseases, such as heart conditions, hip and elbow dysplasia, or other, with proof from a vet that it is congenital.
3) as for temperament - make it a condition that the owner takes the dog to obedience classes. I would not recommend that you guarantee behavior, because then you could be liable for things that are beyond your control, such as a dog that is not properly socialized, or is abused, biting someone.

Also, you might want to contact some breeders in the breed that you have, and discuss what they guarantee.

just befor the pup are ready to go get a vet to look over them then you can guarantee there health as a vet has they ok. a breeder i know tells people that "at any time in the dogs life they have any problems call back for advice of if new owner changes there mind to bring it back for refund", then she finds the pup a new home.
