Crunches can tone the muscle but not reduce the overlaying fat. If you don't get rid of the fat covering the muscle, it doesn't matter how toned you are, it won't show. To get rid of the fat, you have to diet and exercise. To tone the muscles, start with 100 crunches per day and work your way up to 200. The best toning crunches I have found are the decline crunches (where you are laying on a weight bench and your head is lower than your hips. For decline crunches, start with three sets of 8 (yes, I know this sounds easy, but just try it and you will quickly see why I chose such a small number). Work your way up to three sets of 25 to 30 and then start adding weight to the crunches for further toning. Don't overdo it too much or you won't be able to sit up straight the next day.
Good luck and happy sculpting!

dont want to use any cliches but the saying 'abs are made in the kitchen' is true. If you have low body fat, your abs will show without one crunch and if you have high body fat even if you do a thousand sit ups you wont see jack.
If you are planning on reducing your bodyweight i would recommend that you follow this link to ten best ab exercises.

I started out doing 50 when i woke up and 50 before i went to bed. Stop eating after 7 pm and take in proper amount of water (purified if possible) after 1 week take it up to 100 when you wake up and 100 before you go to sleep. Then after another week, try 150 and so forth and so on. try to stay consistent and jog AT-LEAST twice a week. This should help.
