Because I don't believe in him either. But that doesn't mean I don't believe in God, and that doesn't mean I'm not a Christian. Since when did atheists become the arbiters of permissible forms of theism?

An elaboration: atheists seem to assume that the understanding of theism which they got from reading Chick tracts, or their cyber-equivalent, is the understanding shared by all theists. As it happens, I don't believe in Jack Chick's God either. And neither do most mainline Protestants. Just because you can trash an infantile fundamentalist form of theism doesn't mean you have a real clue about theism in general.

This God that I do not believe in is the one that is, in one breath an angry, jealous, spiteful God, and in another breath, is an omniscient, all knowing, all loving God. The God I do not believe in is the one that "must remain hidden" (which is the reasons given for him not making himself known physically to human kind as non-believers simply ask of him to prove his existence), yet he writes a book and makes himself incarnate 2000 years ago - hardly a way to remain hidden.... The God I do not believe in is the one that tells me that I have complete free will - but when something crappy happens, its God's plan. A plan cannot exist with free will...
Youre free to believe whatever you wish. I do not arbitrate any permissable forms of theism. I think all are ridiculous and based on stone age thinking.

As an ex-Christian atheist, I find myself strangely agreeing with your observations. As some of these other answers indicate, many of my fellow atheists seem to enjoy ridiculing Christians. I remember being on the receiving end of this ridicule, and now that I'm an atheist, I am frequently embarrassed by the behavior of other fellow atheists.

God is the end result of a failed search for truth by a very shallow mind, provided that any search was made at all instead of swallowing the pile of delusional bilge that was spoonfed to you as a child.

Atheism is the belief that there are NO gods. Therefore, the god I don't believe in is all of them. They are all man-made myths. All theists are atheists to a point. I simply believe in one less god than they do.

If you do not believe in God, then how are you a Christian. I am very confused right now. Do you beleive in God??? I have no idea what 'god' you don't believe in. I believe there is only One God and He created everything. I am a CHristian. I have no idea what you are asking.
