If you have a leak, you're then looking for soil moisture. Wet ground. After weeks or months, plant growth can take off around a leak.
There are companies that specialize in leak detection. The can press probes into the ground to check for soil moisture and/or listen for leak. That is better than digging up your whole yard. Look in the yellow pages. "leak detection" or "utility locating".
