Yes, it is a great way for them to learn respect and personal discipline. They do many fun things and most boys love it, if they get into a good troop, some are better than others, look into their activities and talk to people before picking your troop. Besides, if they make it to an Eagle Scout there are college scholarships available and it looks great on their applications for both work and school!

Yes, very much so. He will learn many of the things the schools neglect, such as a sense of moral value, courage, and practical survival and related skills. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts do more than any other programs to help a kid grow up to be someone you can be proud of.
But there are those lines about pedophilia, and about homophobia. Do you people realize that these two are inconsistent? If you are afraid of pedophilia, then you know that the Boy Scouts have a rule against gays being troop leaders (or even scouts, if they are out of the closet). It's not homophobia, although I think a lot of people would assume it is; it's just saying "gay kids can go elsewhere; we don't want to go on camping trips and have the problems mixing gays and straights would cause." And of course, gay troop leaders would be an obvious problem.
If it is homophobia to think these things should be left to personal choice AFTER AGE 18, then call me a homophobe, too. I believe in closets: ain't nobody's business what consenting adults do in private.

I thot it was good when I was in it. Years after those Scout experiences I discovered it was those men I was a scout with that took the time to say hello to me at the High School Reunions and things like that.
And, to tell you the truth, we got into a lot more trouble at church camp trying to impress the girls than we ever did as scouts.

I would love to find an alternative for boy scouts in our area. I would rather not have my son in Boy Scouts. I think it's a divisive group.
My 5 year old was talking about it and I told him that he could join, but that they are not fair to homosexuals. He gave this look and said "I don't want to be in there!"

Yes, it is. But remember, the time they spend at scout activities isn't free babysitting. The best thing is for you to get involved, also. Maybe not in a leadership role, but get to know the leaders, offer to bring snacks or craft supplies. Offer to lend assistance on any field trips, fund raisers, etc.
As a former Scout leader, I can tell you that any and all help is appreciated.

The boy scouts doing not thing every one is equal and they teach that to the children. Is that what you want you son to learn? If not look into another group that is more tolerable of every one, and that doesn't exclude types of people.

Honestly, I think this depends ONE HUNDRED PERCENT on who the troop leaders are. Some of them are really good and some just seem like they don't even want to be there.
Talk to other parents who have kids in the troop and see what they think. Also talk to your boys and ask them if they even want to join. Scouting isn't for everyone.
