Where we live, square dancing is a year long unit in PE for fourth graders. At the end of the year, during a state history program, they demonstrate what they have learned for their parents. At junior high level, there is a three week unit that covers dance. However, it is more of a freestyle. The students are broken down into groups and each group presents a dance they choreograph along with a small solo for each student. Dancing is exercise. Like sports, it is taught in an effort to teach teamwork and exercise for improved health. Dancing may reach children who would not be reached by more aggressive sports like dodge ball or individual events like running around the football field.

PE stands for Physical Education. The whole point is to teach you how to get exercise. They should teach more dance in PE and America would be healthier.

I think it is a form of socializing, I had to do it way back in the 80's and I am surprised to hear that you all are still doing it.
Don't trip we didn't like it back then either, You always end up partners with the geekiest boy in class and he stepped on my toes....
