as a former bodybuilder I can tell you a "general rule" that we use.
Body Weight x 10 = Maintenance
BW x 14= Growth
When "cutting" we subtract only 200cals per week so as not to shock our metabolism into thinking we're starving thus hoarding fat. We (VERY active) never go below 2000. But our calories are SUPER clean so it doesn't have a great effect on body fat.
Men should never go below 1800 regardless of activity, women 1400.
1200 cal will keep you "functional" ..but I PROMISE you'll gain the weight back...if not more.
It's just too drastic unless you already weight 100lbs.

I think the general rule is 10 times your weight. So if you weight 150 lbs., 1500 calories per day will maintain that weight. More calories=weight gain, fewer=loss. Not sure how true this is, though.

well, it depends. you don't want to deprive your body of food. if you send me your height and weight i can let you know. as for knowing how many to cut back on, its pretty simple. if you are eating 1700 calories a day and you cut out 500 per day (x7 days=3500 calories), you will lose 1 pound just by cutting calories. then, if you add cardio activity, lets say 5x per week and that you burn about 350 calories per time, you will lose 1/2 pound per week. any other questions?

Total body weight (times) body fat in a percentage = x
x (minus) total body weight (times) 14 if sedentary and 17 if active.
This is a pretty accurate measure.
