There's nothing that says there has to be anything at a wedding, but typically what's known as the Groom's cake is being served at the Rehersal dinner (older traditions serve the groom's cake at the wedding; however recently couples have been serving this cake at the rehersal dinner). The Groom's cake is typically richer (usually Chocolate) than the wedding cake and a lot of times it is made to reflect who the groom is (for example, if the groom is a musician, it can be made in the shape of a guitar).
But just because tradition states this or that doens't mean you have to follow it to a T. Ultimately, it is your son and his bride's choice. It's their day!

There does not have to be a cake. But here in the South we have a cake called the Grooms Cake. This cake is geared towards the groom. It is usually for the size crowd you have and it is some sort of hobby that the groom enjoys. We usually serve it at the rehearsal dinner. This might be what you are looking for. At my cousins wedding she married a firefighter and his groomscake was shaped like a firemans hat. So there are many ways you can do this.
Or just serve up the usual pie or cobbler or Banana pudding. If you are going to a BBQ resturant. Some might prefer this after having BBQ. This might be cheaper for you! Depending on your budget and how much you have already paid into this wedding.

No cake necesary for the rehearsal dinner.
I know there is a groomscake, but I am not sure where is supposed to be given at....
By the way, hispanic are not fat, we are just jolly fellas that enjoy our food.
IF your would be at the BBQ restaurant, see what kind of desserts they have. If they don;t have anything suitable, ask if you can bring your own or if they can prepare something special, Cheesecake is a crowd's pleaser, or you can incorporate your heritage by bringing a traditonal recipe.
Give your new parientes a chance, acepatala for the sake of tu hijo..... they love each other and he will be happy if you are happy along with him
Keep up your great sense of humor (I was laughing so hard !) y muchas felicidades.
Suerte!

I've never heard there's supposed to be a cake at a rehearsal dinner and I used to plan these things. However I worked the Pittsburgh area. Try to ask the bride what the traditions are. And
if they don't like Hispanic and fat, think how they will treat any grandchildren.

Then make your son happy and forget his trophy wife and her snobby plastic parents. There doesn't need to be a big cake like at the wedding, but some sort of dessert that might be offered by the restaurant would be appropriate. Good luck! Sorry you have to get saddled with in-laws like that; it sounds like you are the one with the good heart.

I don't think so. But here's some unasked for advise-get rid of the negative vibes you have about yourself. This is reverse snobbery you are showing. Why not ask the bride's mother for advise? This way, you can open up a dialogue with her. And try not to view your future daughter-in-law as a plastic trophy wife. She's going to be the mother of your future grandchildren and you want to be on good terms with her. Good luck, dear.

From the sounds of it, they probably don't eat cake anyway....lol. There are no rules about what kind of food to have at the rehearsal dinner. You can have any kind of dessert. I personally didn't want cake because I knew we were having it the next day at the wedding.

If the bride isn't doing a groom's cake for the wedding reception, do one at the rehearsal. Make it themed, either to reflect your son and his interest (fireman theme) or to reflect both the bride and groom. Make it a surprise.

It depends on your tradition from your country or family.
I've never seen one at the rehearsal dinner.
Since it's typically the night before, it's usually kept a light fruity dessert, after a good meal.
have fun, and just be yourself!
Maybe the snobs will realize how much fun they're missing!
:)
